Description:

Chapman University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position under the NSF grant BCS-2234786, led by PI Sehyr in collaboration with PI Caselli at Boston University, beginning Spring 2024.

This position, located on the Chapman University Rinker Health Science campus in Irvine, California, offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to a cutting-edge project focusing on sign reduction in American Sign Language using computational and machine learning techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

• Video data preparation and processing from a large database of sign videos.
• Extraction and analysis of spatial coordinates from signers’ joint positions.
• Visualization and benchmarking for machine learning models of automatic sign recognition.
• Implementation and testing of machine learning pipelines.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Proficiency in advanced programming, data analysis, machine learning, and computer vision for video analysis.
• Excellent communication skills in written English and American Sign Language (or willingness to learn ASL).
• Commitment to ethical and culture-responsive research practices.
• Demonstrable skills in preparing grant proposals and scientific manuscripts.

Desirable Attributes:

• Lived experience of deafness or strong connection with the deaf community.
• Expertise or willingness to learn coding and scripting languages relevant to the project.
• Knowledge of machine learning algorithms and frameworks.
