THIS POSITION REQUIRES AN UNEXPIRED U.S. PASSPORT AND ABILITY TO WORK AT SEA UP TO TWO (2) MONTHS PER YEAR.
The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) has offices and laboratory space on both the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) campus in La Jolla and at the Scripps Nimitz Marine Facility on Point Loma. It is part of SIO's Oceans and Atmosphere (OA) Section with multidisciplinary programs of scientific research including: ocean acoustics, bioacoustics, seafloor geophysics, signal processing, ocean optics and underwater imaging, air-sea interaction and surface waves, upper-ocean physics, and ocean chemistry. MPL has contracts & grants with federal agencies, industry, other Universities and nonprofits, and various state agencies. MPL's research programs are both theoretical and applied. The MPL machine shop at Point Loma supports MPL and SIO research programs fabricating unique and complex instrumentation in support of exploratory technological development appropriate to applied research programs. MPL has over 130 permanent academic and staff employees and about 100 annual students, visiting appointments, and volunteers.
The Marine Physical Laboratory division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking to hire a Research Data Analyst 2. As a member of a field research group conducting ocean acoustics and signal processing research, the incumbent shall assist in the collection of acoustic and environmental data at-sea and provide an initial assessment of data quality. Develop data processing algorithms, test cases, and algorithm documentation. Assist in analysis of acoustic and environmental data including documentation of the results. Works on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Responsibilities in Acoustic and Environmental Data Collection, Initial Data Quality Assessment, and Data Archival include:
Assist in data documentation and archival both during and after an experiment.
Assist in developing and implementing environmental sampling and archival plans (e.g. ship MET data, CTD collection, TLoggers, etc.
Assist in testing and calibrating field instrumentation (e.g. source transducers and deployed environmental sensors).
Responsibilities in Algorithm Development and Data Analysis include:
Develop, test, and document algorithms to process data from acoustic and environmental sensors in MATLAB or Python.
Formulate the data analysis approach, analyze the data, and summarize the results.
Compare analysis results with predictions from both ray and full-wave propagation models.
Evaluate and incorporate into data analysis various situational awareness and environmental data sets to augment data collected at-sea (e.g. AIS (local shipping), bathymetry, wind speed, water column sound speed and current characteristics, etc.).
Responsibilities in Documentation and Presentation Preparation include:
Prepares or assist in preparation of plots and related technical information for use in scientific publications, technical reports, proposals, and oral presentations. Using experience with signal processing, statistical analysis, and propagation modeling, provide support of research proposals.
Responsibilities in Facilitate Use of Data Archive, Processing Algorithms, and Propagation Models include:
Assist in the design, documentation, and implementation of archival structures for experiment data. Work directly with faculty, researchers, staff, graduate students, and post-docs to facilitate their use of processing algorithms, propagation models, and analysis of archived data sets.
