Visiting Research Scientist - Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology Job Summary The Visiting Research Scientist will develop a model of cowpea growth as part the BioCro model and use this model to identify traits that maximize productivity. The duties of this position include collecting and processing data from field grown plants; including determining tissue masses, photosynthetic capacity using gas exchange, growth stages, and elemental concentrations, which will be used to train and validate the model.
Duties & Responsibilities - Develop, train and validate a cowpea crop model, and use the model to identify trait values that optimize productivity.
- Plan and execute experiments to collect, process and analyze field data of cowpea growth and physiology.
- Write a manuscript describing the cowpea model and findings, including execution and interpretation of statistical analyses.
- Assist with planning and execution of experiments to collect and process canopy nitrogen dynamics data.
Additional Physical Demands Position will work outside during the summer, performing moderately strenuous tasks such as harvesting and carrying plant tissue, and carrying equipment.
Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. in a life sciences field, such as plant biology, crop sciences, physics, or chemistry. Must have previously developed, trained, and validated crop models using the BioCro modeling framework. Must have published results from models related to crops in peer-reviewed journals.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Proficient with the R and C++ programming languages.
- Familiar with differential equations systems and numerical algorithms to solve such systems.
- Familiar with Git version control software and the GitHub work coordination Web site.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The salary range for this position starts at $55,840.
