Position Information

Water Safety Officer I (SR-15)

$4,177/month
Performs as a trainee in a planned training program in ocean water safety work; assists in making ocean rescues and administering emergency life support measures; learns and enforces ordinances, rules, and regulations governing beach activities and shore water usage; advises public of ocean-related hazards on a continuous basis; renders first aid in cases of injury; and performs other related duties as required.


Current Vacancy Information:
Anticipated vacancies are with the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division. These vacancies are full-time positions (40 hours/week), but are subject to irregular work schedules, including shift, rotation, weekend, and/or holiday work.


Special Working Conditions:
Exposed to various weather conditions for prolonged periods; hazards when effecting a rescue; high surf and strong currents; possibility of physical harm while monitoring beach regulations; may have to perform duties unassisted.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT :
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

QUALIFYING PERFORMANCE TEST:
As part of the selection process, the Honolulu Emergency Services Department will be conducting a Performance Test. The Performance Test will consist of running 1,000 yards and swimming 1,000 yards. The test will determine whether a candidate has the required stamina and ability to carry out the duties a Water Safety Officer will be expected to perform on the job. Maximum time allowed: 25 minutes


The performance test will be administered on a pass/fail basis. Candidates must pass the performance test in order to be considered for the position.
