Job Description and Duties

Per CCR 249.3, this job control may be used to fill subsequent vacancies.

Under general supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the incumbent performs a more responsible and routine seasonal work that requires knowledge of the PD/EP Branch operations, organization, policies and issues. The incumbent reviews and processes information received from field offices through electronic and other resources used to monitor the presence and impact of invasive species throughout the state. The incumbent will also work on entomological or plant pest field and laboratory work as needed to assist with responding to emergency projects.

• Review and enter technical trapping survey data for specific pests into internal databases, spreadsheets and Integrated Plant Health Information System including survey location, trap servicing information, quantity of traps and other details as needed.

• Enter and compile monthly report data from the state and county run trapping programs used to complete federal accomplishment reports relevant to current and future funding.

• Review monthly county data reports (Report 1) for acracy, completion and alignment with county survey agreements.

• Provide customer service and communicate /coordinate with the County staff to provide feedback and obtain corrections for the monthly county data reports as needed.

• Assist with the creation of survey summary guides for county agricultural staff.

• Follow established protocols for visual survey, eradication and detection/delimitation trapping. Service various insect traps, perform visual surveys and insect sweeps, visually inspect for target pest damage on local plant hosts, and conduct eradication treatments (mixing and application of spray materials).

• Collect, process, and package suspect plant and insect samples that are removed from foliage using various insect/plant collection tools and inspected for target pests.

• Read maps to drive to multiple locations using a state or rental vehicle when performing field activities.

• Draw maps to show exact geographic locations using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to show the coordinates; longitude and latitude.

• Provide professional customer service to staff and/or public via telephone by distributing information and/or referring customers to appropriate records/resources.

Working Conditions

The work settings vary; however, 60 percent of the work will be performed in permanent buildings or trailers leased or owned by the state or cooperating agencies or other locations. The employee may work in isolated locations and may work alone for extended periods. Offices for employees working indoors are equipped with standard office equipment including a desk, chair, phone, filing and storage cabinets, printer, copier and fax machines, and computer. Computer software used may include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher.

The incumbent will be required to drive, have a valid driver license and have a safe driving record as documented by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The outdoor work environment may require working in extremes of weather and temperature. Changes in lighting such as alternating bright sunlight and dark shade are encountered. Noise levels constantly vary. Terrain encountered varies from smooth and stable to irregular and unstable. Incumbent may experience regular exposure to dust, pollen and moisture. Some trap types use a specific chemical insect lure; some of these lures may contain small amounts of pesticide. The work area can be urban or rural.

When working in the field, the employee may encounter extremes in temperature and humidity, variable terrain (smooth to irregular and unstable), and aquatic or riparian situations. The employee may work with varied vehicles and equipment such as global positioning system units, spray equipment, trailers, pumps of various kinds, and ATVs. Activities may require the mixing, loading and application of pesticides, driving for several hours, lifting, bending, reaching and climbing, and moving equipment. Noise level for work is variable. Incumbent may work extended hours and days at any given time in the month including weekends and holidays. Incumbent may also be required to travel on short notice that requires several and continuous nights in length.
