Job Description Summary The Paralegal/Senior Paralegal performs legal research, analyzes legal issues and/or policies, and prepares various legal documents under direction and supervision of a licensed attorney in the Wake Forest University Legal Department, who has ultimate responsibility and accountability for work product. Also works closely with an attorney in the Legal Department to co-lead practice area teams. This work requires knowledge of legal concepts, processes, procedures, and practices, as well as excellent communication and leadership skills. In addition, this position provides support for Wake Forest University Health Sciences and certain other affiliates.
Job Description Essential Functions: - Co-leads substantive work teams for designated legal practice areas within the Legal Department.
- Mentors and advises developing legal support staff.
- Performs legal research, analyzes legal issues and/or policies, and prepares various legal documents including those of a more complex nature.
- Manages/facilitates and responds to inquiries from WFU clients.
- Drafts, reviews, and approves various legal documents for form and legality.
- Drafts, reviews, and edits policies and procedures, position statements and transaction and research memos.
- In coordination with the Director of Claims & Litigation, compiles, reviews, and organizes documents and other information for hearings, mediations, arbitrations, etc.
- Compiles, reviews, and organizes documents and other information for meetings.
- Conducts fact-finding, data collection, and analysis used to prepare statements and arguments.
- Prepare agendas and/or take notes during meetings.
- Coordinates preparation, assembly, and distribution of information requests needed on ad hoc projects.
- Coordinates with the Director of Claims & Litigation or other members of the Legal Department to draft and/or review pleadings, discovery requests and responses, correspondence, etc.
- Coordinates with the Director of Claims & Litigation in the intake of claims and complaints received, response deadlines, notifications needed, and the preparation and distribution of materials and evidence in support of litigation and claims process.
- Assists with library maintenance, special projects, and preparation of corporate documents.
- Attends seminars and workshops to maintain current working knowledge of legal concepts and systems and has an understanding of relevant case law, statutes and regulations affecting relevant practice areas.
- Conducts all work and maintains all information in strict confidence and in compliance with ethical obligations of the legal profession.
- Duties will also include other legal practice areas as assigned.
Other Functions: - Establish, maintain, and close out matter files; prepare matter status reports.
- Assist Legal Department Administrative Assistant, as needed, with scheduling meetings and coordinating calendars.
- As needed, provide clerical and administrative support including processing of incoming and outgoing materials, data entry, filing, copying, mailings, etc. with attention to detail with coordination with Legal Department Administrative Assistant and the Executive Assistant to the Vice President and General Counsel.
- As needed, assist with processing outside attorney invoices.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: - Associate's degree in Paralegal Studies or success completion of an ABA-accredited program of education for legal assistant, at a minimum, or other relevant education with a minimum 5 years experience in a legal environment.
- North Carolina Paralegal Certification (NCCP) highly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
- Ability to draft high-quality legal documents, including but not limited to: contracts, pleadings, legal memoranda, affidavits, and correspondence.
- Knowledge of and proficiency in the principles and procedures of legal research, including Westlaw.
- Ability to analyze, abstract, and summarize facts and information, including complex contracts and other documents.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of information.
- Proficiency in computer skills and relevant software; excellent typing skills with attention to accuracy and details.
- Ability to travel, as required, to attend outside appointments.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: BA/BS or higher degree from a state or nationally accredited four year institution of higher education. Experience in a non-profit or academic environment. Knowledge of legal concepts and procedures in several practice areas, particularly those that are relevant to an institution of higher education.

Environmental Conditions: Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. This position is primarily in-person working from the Legal Department's office with the option for remote work one or two days per week with supervisor approval.
