Position overview

Position title: Rachel Carson College Elective Courses Pre-six Lecturer

Salary range: Course credit varies from one to five credits. A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $8,282 - $14,100 (based on salary points 1-19). Please see the UCSC Salary Scales and refer to the Non-senate Instructional (NSI) Unit 18 Pre-six Lecturer Academic Year scale. Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) valuation may vary and the course salary will be adjusted accordingly. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year (see Summer Session Faculty and Lecturer Pay).



Percent time: Variable, based on the course load assigned.



Anticipated start: Appointments are contingent on the hiring units instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments beginning in spring quarter 2024 through spring quarter 2025. Initial appointments made after this period must be made through other recruitments.



Position duration: Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position Description




The Rachel Carson College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach in its non-core undergraduate courses, especially in the areas of sustainability studies and science and entrepreneurship. The theme of the College is "Environment and Society" (see and most of these classes focus on one aspect or another of social and ecological sustainability, from the social science, natural science, and engineering perspectives. These courses are interactive, involving both classroom instruction and hands-on experiential learning.


The ideal candidate will have both instructional and occupational experience in fields and areas relevant to the advertised position, be willing to work with and mentor enthusiastic and dedicated students and student groups, and be committed to increasing diversity in the green economy. The successful candidates must be able to work with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Rachel Carson College :





Qualifications



Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
M.A/M.S.; or a B.A./B.S. degree with a minimum of three years' professional and/or teaching experience in areas related to sustainability studies, science, and entrepreneurship such as renewable energy policy, regulation, and technology; urban agriculture and permaculture; water issues and conservation; household consumption and practices; green building and landscape design; and urban transportation planning. Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered.
