About the Department and Role

The Instructional Assistant will work in the Culinary Arts and Baking Program at Maple Street Correctional Center in Redwood City. This individual will perform duties related to the day-to-day operations of a teaching kitchen which include supporting students; preparation of supplies, material, and equipment; upkeep of facilities and equipment; assistance in food production; demonstration of cooking skills, storekeeping functions; and proper and safe use of equipment.  

This full-time, benefitted 30/week position is for an energetic individual with excellent communication and organizational skills to assist in performing Culinary Instruction in a correctional setting. The candidate will be assisting the instructor with instruction and training and prepare students for entry level employment in the culinary, baking, and/or hospitality field.

Responsibilities

The Instructional Assistant assembles and puts away materials, supplies and equipment used in demonstrations and classroom assignments; operates and maintains the kitchen, pantry, office, and classroom; assists students and chef with instructional activities; and organize, receive, and stores food and supplies.

Reports to Maple Street In-Custody and Re-entry Manager and Maple Street Chef Instructor.

Job Requirements

• Work closely with the Chef Instructor.
• Instructs students on the proper and safe use and operation of a variety of equipment and tools.
• Assists chef and students in demos, classes, and catering events.
• Works with the students to receive, inspect and store deliveries.
• Effectively use a computer. Assist in student data entry.
• Takes ownership and keeps pantry, classroom, kitchen, and work areas orderly and clean.
• Provide regular and useful feedback to students and supervisors in an objective, consistent, and timely manner.
• Be able to show enthusiasm, take initiative, have organizational and people skills.
• Participate in the assessment process of the student’s progress development/goals.
• Work individually with students who require extra help, have questions, or want career guidance.
• Introduce trainees to class expectations on the first day.
• Facilitate cooking and baking instruction to students.
• Reports equipment and needed maintenance to supervisors.
• Monitor and ensure proper care and security of all materials and equipment.
• Enforce sanitation principles, participation policies, hygiene policy, and other jail policies.
• Understanding of opportunities and limitations associated with instructing incarcerated students in a correctional facility.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Experience

• Two to five years related experience and/or training in a professional kitchen.
• Teaching experience preferred, not required.
• Be passionate about education, food, and working with students.
• CA Food Handler’s Card
• Ability to follow directions in a fast-paced environment and move quickly.
• Must successfully pass background verification specifically for employment in the correctional facility.

Physical Requirement

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch.
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits

JobTrain offers a competitive pay and benefits package including health insurance, dental insurance, vision, paid holidays, paid winter break, paid time off, retirement program employer match, long-term disability and life insurance.

The anticipated hiring range is $25.50 – 30.00/hour.
