Job description

The person in this position will work 8 hours per day (6:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.), Monday - Friday, 12 months per year. Under direction, sets-up, operates, and programs computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools to fabricate and manufacture machine parts used in a school-district setting; performs special shop jobs requiring skilled operation of shop equipment; and performs related work as required.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Sets-up and operates 3 and 4 Axis CNC mills and lathes to produce parts.
• Programs 3 and 4 Axis CNC mills and lathes from 3D files and 2D schematics.
• Reads and interprets blueprints and design sketches to ensure proper dimensions and specifications for parts.
• Generates G-code from a CAD-CAM system.
• Purchases tools, cutters, and supplies required for operation of CNC machine.
• Selects the appropriate cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials to be used on machines.
• Designs, fabricates, installs, modifies, and evaluates parts made from metals, woods, and plastics.
• Installs, maintains, and makes repairs and adjustments to lathes, milling machines, drill presses, planers, metal shears, grinders, sanders, and other types of milling, woodworking and machinist shop equipment.
• Levels, fastens down, and makes adjustments to equipment.
• Removes, replaces, and sharpens cutting tools and blades of equipment.
• Inspects, maintains, repairs, and modifies equipment to meet safety regulations.
• Complies with applicable safety regulations and procedures.
• Leads the work of others who assist in loading and unloading large, heavy and bulky machines and equipment.
• Maintains and repairs play equipment such as tricycles, bicycles, scooters and wagons as needed.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience : High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience equivalent to full-time work in the set-up, operation, and programming of CNC machines in a machining environment. Knowledge of CNC programming languages is required (MasterCam is desirable). Completion of a CNC Machine Programmer certificate may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Part-time experience will be considered and adjusted appropriately. Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

LICENSE : Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver License and remain insurable at the standard insurance market rate. Candidates must submit a recent (within the last 30 days) original DMV driving record by the oral rating exam .

Knowledge of :

• CAD-CAM software.
• Manual programming and CNC programming languages.
• Standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in both the millwright and machinist trades.
• Operating forklifts, tackle rigging, and hydraulic jacking techniques to move large, heavy and bulky machines and parts safely and effectively.
• Basic qualities of various metals and materials used for repairs and fabrication of parts and their adaptability and uses in specific situations.
• Applicable safety regulations and procedures.
• Proper safety procedures for protection of students, employees, and equipment.

Ability to :

• Modify, design, and fabricate guards and safety devices for all types of mechanical equipment.
• Operate and repair the following equipment: 3 and 4 Axis CNC mills and lathes, metal lathes, milling machines, drill press, metal formers, shears, power saws, arc welders, acetylene welder, grinder, sheet metal forming equipment, and other power and hand tools used in maintenance shops.
• Generate G-code from a CAD-CAM system to fabricate machine parts.
• Read and interpret drawings and blueprints.
• Create line and dimension drawings of proposed parts to be fabricated.
• Lead the work of others.
• Read and write at a level required for satisfactory performance.
• Communicate effectively with manufacturers, suppliers, and district employees.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

Applications will be accepted from the general public and district employees who possess the above qualifications. The district reserves the right to invite applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the requirements needed for the position to continue in the examination process. The examination may consist of an evaluation of training and experience, multiple choice, performance, and oral/technical exams. Persons needing reasonable accommodation must notify the Office of Personnel Services by the last day to file. A qualifying score must be achieved on all portions of the examination in order to be placed on the open eligibility list. Outside and district candidates will be placed on one ranked list, with eligible permanent district employees receiving five seniority points which will be added to their final scores.
