Job description

The Facilities and Operations Coordinator will provide facilities and operational support to the College of Engineering (CoE). CoE facilities include the Seamans Center, laboratories in IATL and the Chemistry Building, as well as research center and institute buildings, including the Driving Safety Research Institute, Engineering Research Facility, Operator Performance Laboratory, IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering Buildings (Stanley Hydraulic Building, IIHR Wave Basin, IIHR model annexes, Iowa Geological Survey, Physiology Research Laboratory, James Street Laboratory, and the LACMERS IIHR facility).

The Facilities and Operations Coordinator will manage in coordination with college leadership, faculty, and/or staff, all Facilities Management projects and outside contractors in support of the department, including maintaining records, blueprints, and contracts, coordinating project activities and budget, and providing schedule support. The Facilities and Operations Coordinator will also coordinate the ongoing maintenance, upkeep, renovations, repairs and facility needs of the college ensuring safe operation and regulation compliance. This position will also be responsible for maintaining and managing all compliance related information.

Specific Job Duties and Tasks

• Initiate purchasing requests for supplies and equipment. May also initiate purchasing requests for furniture if requested.
• Monitor expenses related to renovation and maintenance projects.
• Assist in the preparation, proofreading, and editing of strategic planning materials.
• Serve as the Primary Building Coordinator for Seamans Center and Engineering Research Facility. Serve as the Building Coordinator for the Engineering spaces in the Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratory and Chemistry Building. Serve as back up Building Coordinator for all other College of Engineering Buildings.
• Oversee and manage facilities, furniture, equipment, and systems needs such as janitorial, maintenance, pest control, health protection, recycling, freight dock, and room set-up.
• Advise faculty researchers and/or departmental staff regarding building and utility considerations regarding equipment needed for offices and/or laboratories.
• Act as liaison between the college and appropriate university offices and/or external contractors and service providers for building management.
• Serve as the Safety Coordinator and technical expert on handling, storage and disposal of chemicals. Conduct chemical and waste training programs. Provide consultation on spill plan preparedness. Communicate state and federal regulations and EHS policies to hazardous and radioactive waste generators.
• Direct activities of the Safety Advisory Team & conduct inspections/audits of lab operations or building site reviews for regulatory compliance; provide documentation. Communicate significant issues to appropriate staff or supervisor.

Education Requirement

• Bachelors' s degree in facilities management, business, engineering, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

• A minimum of one year of experience in facilities management.
• Knowledge of and experience with basic mechanical and electrical control systems, computing systems, data acquisition systems, and scientific equipment maintenance.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and participate as a member of a team and work groups in a constructive manner.
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet and maintain UI Driving Policy.
• Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Demonstrated commitment to customer service excellence and high standards.

Desired Qualifications

• Knowledge of health, safety, fire code, OSHA, DNR, and NSF regulations relevant to an academic research environment.
• Experience in managing or repairing the equipment in laboratory setting.
• Demonstrated working competency using Microsoft Office Programs, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
