Job Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual who is looking to build their leadership skills while leading a team of talented design engineers developing products for the Industrial Lighting market. The Manager of Design Engineering for Industrial will take charge of the team’s day-to-day activities including project management, team meetings, driving PDS deliverables, collaborating with manufacturing, and mentoring new talent. The manager must have sufficient technical expertise, be culturally aligned with business needs, demonstrate a strategic mindset, and be able to creatively execute the overall strategy that supports the Industrial roadmap.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Directly manage and mentor a team that is responsible for developing products for the heavy Industrial environment.
- Develop and maintain project schedules. Teaches/Leads various aspects of the design process including, but not limited to the development of part geometry, assembly design and drawing generation. Develops, distributes, and/or approves engineering data in the form of Engineering Change Notices, bills of material and parts tracking. Manage collaboration with vendor partners.
- Manages relationships with internal manufacturing facilities and external vendors to resolve part or assembly issues, deviation requests and bill of material errors, and schedule and conduct pilot/pre-production runs, first article inspections, tool run-offs and plan for production release.
- Assists with human resource allocation and budget planning in accordance with roadmap provided by product management. Conduct annual performance reviews, recommend compensation planning, and development of team members. Lead team meetings for each major product.
- Champions and schedules concept development by initiating and developing concepts for new products from Project Charters, and Specification Matrix provided by the Product Manager and other avenues such as reviewing competitor's samples and documentation, and free design techniques. Ensures concepts must be agreeable with standard manufacturing methods utilized in the appropriate manufacturing facility.
- Continuously looks for and directs the implementation of process improvements related to productivity, quality, purchasing and manufacturing; to include sourcing new or alternate processes, equipment, and/or training of manpower. Looks for advancements or changes in technology via tradeshows, technology councils, vendors or other methods.
- Teaches/Supports ABS/Lean Transformation by leading Kaizen teams and ensuring team completes post-Kaizen activity. Monitors the effectiveness of Kaizen-related changes.
- Ensures the team is submitting proper prototyping requests and working effectively with the model shop for the production of prototypes and assembly.
Education (minimum education required)
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Skills and Minimum Experience Required
- Proficiency in Engineering Process, Tools and System Knowledge including but not limited to Tooling and Manufacturing Process (casting, injection molding, stamping, progressive tooling, etc.), Finishing Process (powder coating, electro-plating, anodizing, and vacuum metallization, etc.), and Design for Manufacturing.
- Familiar in various aspects of luminaire design.
- Highly skilled in 3D CAD modeling techniques specific to Solidworks and competent in Acuity’s standards for 2D drawing annotations and formatting and able to teach these techniques to new talent. Familiar with CF Design thermal modeling and the interpretation of thermal simulation data.
- Teach and Drive Engineering Discipline and Expertise. Understands the impact and importance of details and data accuracy to deliver high quality product without sacrificing deadlines.
- Working knowledge of applicable Regulatory and Non-Regulatory Codes & Standards such as UL, DLC, and/or DLC standards and testing processes.
- The ability to challenge current ways of thinking, and to seek alternative ways to view or define problems and ability to put one’s innovative ideas into practice effectively across the matrix.
- Exhibits understanding of natural sources of conflict and acts to prevent of soften them. When conflicts arise, effectively works them through to optimum outcome.
- The ability to clearly evaluate the facts of situations, apply logic, rationality, and objectivity in decision making. Teach LEAN methodology and practices such as standard work, time study, cause & effect, 5 Why analysis and other tools of DMAIC
- The ability to communicate and translate a business strategy to action plans and addresses misses effectively using root cause/countermeasures. Communicates a compelling and inspired vision or sense of common purpose. Holds team accountable to milestones and rallies support behind the organizational vision.
- Strategic mindset, strong business acumen, and experience in achieving business results and process improvements.
- Must be able to present and communicate project status updates to executive leadership.
