Chesapeake Bank and the Virginia Bankers Association (VBA) are partnering to offer a unique summer internship opportunity. Our partnership with the Virginia Banker's Association will allow the intern to complete requirements in a designed program and receive a certificate of completion. This experience will provide educational courses and workshops, opportunities to attend networking events, community involvement and a chance to complete a capstone project, focusing on a banking industry-wide topic.
Exposure to Virginia’s Banking Industry:
Students will have the opportunity to participate in one of five internships this summer:
- Marketing Intern - Williamsburg , VA
- Risk Assurance Intern - Kilmarnock/Williamsburg, VA
- Product Experience Intern - Williamsburg, VA
- Information Technology Intern - Williamsburg, VA
- Innovation & Strategy Intern - Williamsburg, VA
- Human Resources Intern - Kilmarnock, VA
Application deadline is Friday, March 15, 2024.
Interviews are planned to start at the end of March and into April.
Internships will start in May and will last between 10 to 12 weeks.
Marketing Intern- Williamsburg, VA
The Marketing Intern will assist with a wide range of Marketing projects. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. He or she will gain a better understanding of the role that Marketing plays, and be better prepared to work in this field.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with multiple marketing projects including attending all related meetings.
- Work on Shop Local project developing systems, processes, spreadsheets, timelines to improve the campaign.
- Assist branches with promotions and ordering/delivering of promotional items and events. Create an organized promotional items storage system.
- Participate in promotional and employee events.
- Conduct market research to include competitive analyses.
- Attend Marketing Committee meetings.
- Attend meetings with external vendors as they arise.
- Review social media strategies, research and recommend other options.
- Take inventory of all customer communications (including all standard letters, notices, emails sent by all departments), review and revise to be accurate, adhere to brand standards and Chesapeake friendly.
Risk Assurance Intern - Kilmarnock/Williamsburg, VA
Board of Directors and executive management recognize the ever increasing importance of effective risk management efforts in meeting their organizations strategic objectives. The changing regulatory environment and higher shareholder expectations serve as a critical catalyst driving this heightened need to identify and address significant risks that could prevent a company from achieving its strategic objectives. Areas where Chesapeake’s risk assurance practices can bring value to an organization include: assisting management in their assessment of risks and controls; recommendations resulting in increased value and cost reduction of compliance related activities; applying the concepts of ERM to help Chesapeake identify, assess, mitigate and proactively consider emerging risks; identifying opportunities for Chesapeake to effectively mitigate risk and improve business performance.
Responsibilities:
- Play a role as an intern in Chesapeake’s risk assurance practice assisting in evaluation of internal controls, internal audit support fieldwork, compliance testing, observation, review and monitoring of system reports relating to unusual activity, learning standards and practices, and reporting practices.
- Participate in select monitoring/testing and security reviews.
- Participate in projects, demonstrating creative thinking and individual initiative.
- Cultivate teamwork dynamics through working as a team member: understanding personal and team roles; contributing in a GPTW environment; and proactively seeking guidance, clarification and feedback.
- Demonstrate flexibility in prioritizing and completing tasks; and communicating potential conflicts.
- Exercise professional skepticism in gathering, reviewing, and analyzing confidential information.
- Understand this role as defined by the three lines of defense to maintain a compliance culture that includes risk management processes.
Product Experience Intern - Williamsburg, VA
This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. He or she will gain a better understanding of the role that products play in the broader business, and be better prepared to work in this field.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with multiple Product Expereince projects including attending all related meetings
- Assist on data analyis relating to product adoption
- Review website and digital platforms and assist with clarifying updates, user education and product highlights
- Conduct market research to include competitive analysis
- Assist with User Research
- Attend Committee meetings with the Product Experience team
- Attend meetings with external vendors as they arise
- Research banking and FinTech trends and suggest updates or changes
- Assist with data clean up efforts
Information Technology - Williamsburg, VA
The IT Intern will support our in-house IT department in providing technical assistance, maintaining computer systems, and configuring hardware and software. The successful candidate will be able to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues, assist with the implementation of new technologies, and provide first level support to team members.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical assistance to staff on hardware and software-related issues
- Deploy and troubleshoot computer systems, hardware, and software
- Monitor system performance and troubleshoot any issues
- Follow established procedures and processes for computer maintenance
- Provide support to team members on the use of computer systems and software
- Research and recommend solutions for technical problems
Innovation & Strategy Intern – Various, VA
This role will participate in and provide support to the work of the Chief Innovation & Strategy Officer. The Chief Innovation & Strategy Officer works to develop strategy for digital, payments, innovation, and other business cases. The work also includes driving innovation portfolio projects, and oversight of the company’s venture investment portfolio. This person will work directly with the Chief Innovation & Strategy Officer.
Typical work may include:
- Developing presentations using MS PowerPoint or similar tools to educate and communicate topics to diverse groups.
- Performing industry research on new and trending topics such as Generative AI, Instant Payments, and fraud trends.
- Generating data reports using report query tools (training on the tools will be provided) and parsing the data using MS Excel or similar formulas.
- Interviewing business unit representatives to understand their challenges and needs in a specific area.
- Assisting Digital, Product, other related departments with projects as needed.
- Some basic administrative support to the Chief Innovation & Strategy Officer.
- Collaborating and communicating with multiple departments and all levels of the organization.
The below requirements will be reviewed when choosing the right intern for each position:
- Pursuing a Bachelor degree in Business, management, finance, economics, accounting, marketing, technology, data analytics and/or management information systems
- Desire to pursue a career in banking.
- Ability to interact with various levels of employees in both written and verbal form.
- Good interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills.
- Experience demonstrating strong problem solving skills and the ability to prioritize duties and handle multiple assignments
- Ability to self-motivate and take responsibility for personal growth and development
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Interest in the broad range of risks affecting financial services including areas of auditing and compliance.
- A basic understanding of one or more of the following: financial reporting concepts, internal audit process, systems detecting unusual activity not compliant with regulation, physical or Informational Security and a general understanding of banking.
- Excellent technical and computer skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel
- Flexible in work schedule and location.
