THE ORGANIZATION
The City of Livermore is a general-law city with a Council/Manager form of government. The five-person City Council consists of the Mayor, who is elected by the citizens for a two-year term, and four Councilmembers who are elected at-large to overlapping four-year terms. There are 8 operationg departments - Administrative Services, City Manager's Office, City Attorney's Office, Community Development, Economic Development, Library, Police, and Public Works. Fire services are provided by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. With a general fund budget of approximately $70 million and a total budget of $257 million, Livermore has 416.225 FTE city employees.
THE CITY ATTORNEY’S OFFICE
The City Attorney’s Office provides the opportunity to work on a broad range of assignments in a fast-paced team-oriented environment. Charged with performing the traditional legal functions associated with a full service municipality, the City Attorney’s Office provides legal counsel to the City Council, City Manager, Department Heads, and the full range of City Boards and Commissions. The Office is staffed with 8.5 FTE including the City Attorney, Assistant City Attorney (2.5 FTE), Deputy City Attorney (current vacancy), Risk Manager, and three administrative support personnel.
THE POSITION
The City Attorney’s Office currently has one vacancy for a Deputy City Attorney. All attorneys are designated ‘At-Will’ and do not have a legal right to continued employment with the City.
This position offers the opportunity to work on a broad range of assignments performing professional legal and administrative work, providing legal counsel to City staff, City Council, and Boards and Commissions; reviewing and drafting contracts, ordinances, and other documents; and representing the City in court.

Candidates are expected have basic experience in the fields of municipal and public law, and the skill set and desire to gain experience in a wide variety of practice areas affecting City business. The Deputy City Attorney candidate should be prepared to accept increasing responsibility as his or her experience grows.
The ideal Deputy City Attorney is skilled in the fields of municipal and public law. The ideal candidate will have an excellent academic record, strong writing, analytical, and public presentation skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with City officials, staff, and the public.
