MENTAL HEALTH WORKER III

Full-Time, 1st Shift, H Unit

$22.71 - $29.81 HOURLY

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Health and Human Services, New Hampshire Hospital has a full-time vacancy for a Mental Health Worker III

This position is assigned to work with the adult and elderly psychiatric patient population at New Hampshire Hospital.

Summary:

Under the direction of the Nursing Coordinator or Charge Nurse, carries out assignment tasks in direct patient care and participates in the health care team and therapeutic milieu within the scope of defined practice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma or high school equivalency credential. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of work experience. Approved formal education includes courses or a degree in psychology, social science, special education, any of the health professions, or other area of approved study.

Experience: Two years of experience in the care of mentally ill or emotionally disturbed persons in a psychiatric facility, two years as a Mental Health Worker, or two years of work experience in a position or combination of positions, that would evidence possession of the requisite skills necessary for satisfactory performance at this level.

License/Certification: Must be certified as a Mental Health Worker. Must possess a valid driver’s license in the state in which the employee resides, with appropriate endorsements required for the type of vehicle being operated. Must complete the State’s Safe Driving Program within the first six (6) months of employment, maintain certification, and have current New Hampshire driving record verified by the Department of Safety, Division of Motor Vehicles indication to major traffic violations.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

An employee may be required to work additional hours beyond their normal work shift, engaged in work that is characteristic of their classification, in order to meet patient care needs/safe staffing levels, established by the Nursing Department of New Hampshire Hospital.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Evidence of or capacity to acquire clinical skills and judgment appropriate to specific area of assignment. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with co‑workers, patients, families, and outside agencies. Effective problem-solving skills. Physical ability to restrain patients.

Responsibilities:

• Acts as preceptor to Mental Health Worker orienteers and provides input to Nursing Coordinator/designee regarding need for further training as demonstrated by performance levels.

• Supports patients in performing activities of daily living (A.D.L.s). Assures that basic needs for food, hygiene and safety in the environment are met.

• Checks and orders unit supplies, submits needed repairs to be done.

• Performs simple somatic interventions, safety checks, observation levels, i.e., vital signs, weights, intake and output.

• Maintains a safe patient environment. Does mechanical restraints and other safety related tasks as assigned. Assists patients in resolving community living problems.

• Participates in the planning and implementation of patient activities.

• Provides Nurse Coordinators with input regarding employees, evaluations, and terminations.

• Provides therapeutic interventions on a 1:1 and/or group basis according to skill level and the individual needs of the treatment units. Utilizes basic behavioral management techniques and therapeutic rationale.

• Participates in treatment planning, implementation and aftercare planning for patients in collaboration with assigned nurse and treatment team.

• Appropriately documents and reports all pertinent patient care data. Utilizes progress notes, precaution and special procedure forms, behavioral flow sheets, etc.

• Fosters positive patient and consumer relations by a professional and courteous demeanor in all interactions and through a professional appearance. Seeks out and utilizes supervision.

• Participates actively in Quality Improvement activities as assigned by Nurse Coordinator.

• Seeks opportunities to expand scope of knowledge and experience through continuing education.

• Exhibits willingness to perform other duties as assigned.

• Maintains safe body mechanics while participating in physically demanding, unpredictable and potentially hazardous patient care situations, example, safety transports physically aggressive patients.

• Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.

• Escorts and supervises patients at appointments, home placements, and other activities as necessary, ensuring that patient safety is maintained.

STAFF WORKPLACE SAFETY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Complies with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures by:

• Maintaining competency in hospital approved Crisis Management Program (CMP) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques for adults, infants, children and AED training.

• Performing accountabilities in accordance with established policies and procedures.

• Communicating with supervisors’ issues related to workplace safety (i.e., ergonomics, body mechanics, environment, equipment, etc.).

• Reporting on the job injuries to supervisor IMMEDIATELY.

• Attending training programs, as appropriate.
