Position Summary/Description:

This position is eligible for a sign-on bonus of $20,000.

RENCI is seeking an innovative and strategic thinker to join our team as the Deputy Director. The Deputy Director is responsible for guiding research efforts, shaping research strategy, and leading interdisciplinary teams. The Deputy Director must be passionate about the promise and role of technological solutions to the world's critical problems, and will play a pivotal role in continuing to develop RENCI as a world-class center for data science and research cyberinfrastructure.

The Deputy Director will serve as a key advisor to the Director in recognizing and enabling future directions for research and development, and work closely with colleagues in the Office of the Director in developing and implementing RENCI's strategic plan. The Deputy Director's work will also involve interfacing with UNC -Chapel Hill faculty and leadership, the UNC System (especially NC State and Duke Universities), the state of North Carolina, the national research community, and a wide range of funding agencies and partners across the U.S.

The Deputy Director will provide mentoring, research and technical leadership, and oversight to talented RENCI staff that includes domain scientists, research scientists, data science and informatics experts, computer scientists, software engineers, and visualization specialists.

Primary duties of the Deputy Director include:

- In consultation with the director, the Office of the Director, and research leads, develop and execute a comprehensive research strategy in alignment with RENCI's goals and objectives.
- Lead, mentor, and manage RENCI's research professionals, providing direction and support to maximize their potential.
- Foster a culture of innovation and collaboration within the research department, promoting cross-disciplinary partnerships and creative problem solving.
- Identify and pursue external partnerships, collaborations, and funding opportunities to support research initiatives. Contribute to engagement efforts in developing a network of collaborators across academia, industry, and government.
- Serve as the Director's representative when called upon.
- Serve as a member of the Office of the Director, whose members work together to facilitate open and effective communication between RENCI's Operations and Research teams and ensure efficient RENCI organizational operations.
- Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in research – and communicate and act on those trends in partnership with the Director, the Office of the Director, and RENCI research leads.
- Ensure compliance with ethical standards, regulations, security, and research protocols.
- Maintain a research program that is aligned with RENCI's strategic goals. It is desirable for the Deputy Director to obtain a secondary appointment as a research or adjunct faculty member in a department or school at UNC -Chapel Hill that is appropriate to the individual's scholarship. This will aid in advancing the individual's research, facilitating a student pipeline, building relationships with campus faculty and increased scholarship opportunities.

Education and Experience:


- A graduate degree in computer science, engineering, or other STEM area.
- A demonstrated ability to make data-driven decisions and demonstrate the art of making data driven decisions.
- Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to a variety of audiences.
- Masters complex issues swiftly and the ability to explain the dimensions and the solutions articulately to decision makers and staff.
- Ability to work as a team member across the organization and with external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated expertise in computer science, engineering, biomedical informatics, or other STEM discipline as evidenced by publications and patents.
- Ability to conduct self in an exemplary fashion to achieve goals and set example for others within the organization.
- Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.
- Ability to effectively interact with all levels of University employees as well as external partners.
- Function as a team player and works to maintain harmonious working relationships with coworkers, peers and supervisors.
