The Department of Food Science and Technology invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position with expertise in chemistry/food chemistry.

FST is taking a leadership role in ensuring that Oregon and beyond will meet 21st century food systems' challenges by integrating sustainability across all parts of our Mission – Education, Research, and Outreach. FST has a long tradition of strong stakeholder engagement and impactful research programs funded by annual research expenditures around $5M of federal and industry grant funding supporting around 50 graduate students.

Food system resilience is critical to meeting present and future needs for sustained provision of food supplies in the face of growing populations, changing climate, and increasingly integrated systems of production and manufacturing. This position is one of seven new positions related to Resilient Food Systems in the FST , Biological & Ecological Engineering ( BEE ) departments including Sustainable Food Packaging ( FST ), Sustainable Food and Beverage Manufacturing ( FST ), Intelligent Food Systems Engineering ( FST / BEE ), Waste to Resource Engineer ( BEE / FST ), Sustainable Seafood Processing, and Seafood Safety at the OSU Seafood Research Center in Astoria. We seek individuals who can blend food chemistry principles with sustainable food production and consumption to meet the challenges of the future.

The principal function of this position is to conduct research and generate new knowledge in food chemistry and apply the knowledge to advance the understandings of food systems. Additional components of the position are to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in food chemistry, and to contribute to University and professional service. The incumbent will develop a research program in basic and applied food chemistry based on expertise with carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, or other food components. Food chemistry research in any of these areas will generate fundamental knowledge leading to increased functionality, optimized textural attributes, improved quality, extended shelf-life and stability, or other attributes of relevance to sustainable food systems. The incumbent will work with the food and beverage industry to develop solutions to major challenges and opportunities in food and beverage manufacturing.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):

Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions), demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom Extension, or other setting, and develop a research program in the academic discipline/unit.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Type:

Office and chemistry lab environment. Travel for field research and presentations. Evening and/or weekend work may be required for conference travel and research work in the field and laboratory.

Additional Salary Information: $85,000 - $95,000
