The Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE) provides high quality animal care and veterinary services, and advises and educates researchers, staff and students on animal experimentation issues while promoting best practices for the responsible use of animals.
What You Will Do
Supervise and schedule husbandry staff responsible for feeding, cleaning, handling, breeding and treatment of experimental procedures according to specified requirements. Solve coverage needs for 365 days per year in assigned facility(ies). Ensure that strict protocols for sterile or disease-controlled environments are followed including animal welfare, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Animal Care and Use Procedures (ACUPs). Ensure assigned facilities are inspection ready. In coordination with Associate Director, Animal Facilities Management determine appropriation of space for animal housing and procedure space as it relates to PI project needs. Ensure decisions are communicated to PI, CARE Vets, CARE Director, and colleagues. Ensure detailed records associated with procedures and research projects in compliance with animal welfare and other relevant laws/regulations are maintained and readily accessible. Oversee supply and animal ordering and maintain animal census electronically. Ensure all animal receiving and animal transports are handled following all applicable protocols and guidelines. Work with PIs to manage movement of all animals. Provide equipment operation and facility specific training to CARE staff, students and lab staff. Oversee facility access approval for research personnel. Provide functional supervision to lab staff in assigned facility(ies)in coordination with their peer supervisors including training, scheduling time to use space and reporting management related issues. Attend facility rounds (Vet led) and facility inspections, such as IACUC, AAALAC, USDA, and NYS. Monitor, diagnose, troubleshoot and repair moderately complex equipment; maintain CARE owned equipment and maintenance records; assist in development of equipment recommendations. Handle building and utility issues with Animal Facilities Project Manager. Respond to or coordinate the response to alarms in assigned facility which could come anytime of the day or night.
What We Need
Bachelor's degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination. Hold AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification or obtain this certification within the first year. Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities. Service oriented. Builds working relationships to solve problems and achieve common goals. Is approachable/accessible to others. Assists others to ensure cooperation of task completion. Engages in problem solving; suggests ways to improve performance and be more efficient. Completes New Supervisor training within first year. Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion , and wellbeing. Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
What We Prefer
Completed certification for Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) and/or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) through AALAS or be eligible for certification. Efforts toward AALAS management certifications such as ILAR and CMAR. Completed biosafety level 2 training and biosafety level 3 experience.
