Job description

The Lyric Repertory Company, a professional theatre company at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, seeks a professional Head Carpenter skilled in theatre scenic and project construction. The position is seasonal and full-time with onsite residency required. 

Collaborate with the Technical Director to manage the physical realization of approved scenic designs. Efficiently supervise daily operations at the scene shop to meet production deadlines. Direct the construction, mounting, and rigging of scenery, overseeing carpenter crews and interpreting shop drawings. Ensure accuracy and adherence to budget and schedule throughout all builds, actively participating to meet deadlines.

 

In the absence of the TD, ensure all construction crew members understand and utilize proper safety equipment and protocols, prioritizing crew safety. Support TD and scene shop manager in crew training, safety protocols, and task delegation. Collaborate with the lead carpenter and TD to plan and execute changeovers, verifying the accuracy, safety, and functionality of scenic elements post-changeover.

 

Assist TD in coordinating load-ins, changeovers, and strikes according to production manager schedules. Provide venue support as necessary to enhance overall season and venue operations

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting (up to 75 lbs.) and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions, such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Employees work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods. 

The Department of Theatre Arts

 

The Department of Theatre Arts offers a BFA in Performance, Design/Tech, and Theatre Education; a BA in Theatre (general studies); and an MFA with concentrations in Costume, Set, and Lighting Design. With approximately 100 students in the combined programs and a faculty that is continually active in the profession. The Department offers a robust slate of productions during the Utah State Theatre academic season. The professional arm of the Department is the Lyric Repertory Company, which provides USU students the opportunity to transition their craft from the academy to the profession, with productions during the summer as well as the academic year.
