Job Description: This leadership position will partner with the Dean to create strategic goals for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) within the College of Engineering and Computer Science, and advise on effective implementation of initiatives undertaken as a part of ECS's strategic plan. The assistant dean will oversee assessment of DEIA in the College, and as the DEIA lead in ECS, serve as the lead spokesperson and authority on DEIA within the College. The role will oversee and coordinate training and education of faculty, staff, students, and student leaders. The Director Inclusive Excellence will strategize to find best practices for recruiting and retaining underrepresented students through events and programs.
Qualifications: - Bachelors degree required. (Advanced degree preferred)
Job Specific Qualifications: - Experience with and knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility principles in higher education
- Knowledge of national effective practices for Inclusive Excellence
- Demonstrated relational skills in partnering and collaborating with diverse organizations and people
- Experience working in a complex environment similar to Syracuse University
- Confidence in public speaking and engaging with diverse audiences, especially for the purposes of (a) communicating DEIA principles and (b) recruiting diverse students, staff, and faculty to Syracuse University
- Exhibits personal integrity, strong interpersonal skills, creativity, flexibility, organization, and initiative
- Ability to develop individual strategic plans, implement programs, organize, initiate, and motivate
- Discretion and an ability to interact with people in sensitive situations.
Responsibilities: - Partner with the Dean to create strategic goals for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) within the College, and advise on effective implementation of initiatives undertaken as a part of the Colleges strategic plan.
- Oversee assessment of DEIA in the College. As the DEIA lead in the College, serve as the lead spokesperson and authority on DEIA within the College.
- Lead regular, consistent, and systematic DEIA training and education for ECS faculty and staff.
- Inform College-wide efforts to integrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility concepts within our curricula.
- Advise the Dean and all search committees on best practices in conducting diverse searches for faculty and staff.
- Assist in the Colleges recruiting of undergraduate and graduate students by presenting at on-campus and virtual recruiting events, addressing questions of prospective students, and generating materials for distribution in partnership with the College recruiting office.
- Assist in limited off-campus recruiting events, roughly two per year, based on opportunities that arise.
- Serve as the ECS liaison to DEIA-related councils and committees at the university level, especially the Academic Leadership for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (ALDEIA). Partner with campus offices, including (as of 2024):
- Office of Diversity and Inclusion
- Office of Multicultural Affairs
- Center for Disability Resources
- LGBTQ Resource Center
- Center for International Services
- Hendricks Chapel
- Revitalize and chair a College Diversity Council. Leverage the Council to solicit feedback, implement initiatives (where appropriate), and generate engagement of faculty, staff and students in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
