Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The mission of the School of Social Work is to advance equity, transform systems, improve lives. The School's curriculum supports the mission and recognizes the uniqueness of the region served, including concerns for disadvantaged, vulnerable, and oppressed individuals, families and communities. Classes provide rigorous and evidence-based content, and give students the opportunity to explore theory, learn intervention skills and engage in challenging dialogue with colleagues.
Position Summary Global Social Development Innovations (GSDI): GSDI is a center at the University of North Carolina's School of Social Work with a team of researchers committed to investigating, documenting, and disseminating knowledge of social development practices designed to address the needs of marginalized and vulnerable youth globally. Our mission is to generate evidence that advances youth well-being, globally. GSDI's work focuses on youth development in the digital age using the positive youth development framework. GSDI formulates its research around three core intervention areas and their intersections. These include youth economic security, youth workforce development, and youth financial inclusion. The Center's current initiatives span six countries in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, including India, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, the United States, and Zambia. GSDI works with local partners to improve the economic and social welfare of children, youth, and their families globally.
We focus on community-driven initiatives, which require meaningful partnerships and collaboration with multiple stakeholders. GSDI has a cadre of local, national, and global research, implementation, and funding partners. GSDI collaborates with faculty members affiliated with various UNC schools and departments, as well as other Universities globally. GSDI also prides itself as a training center for graduate students in social work and related disciplines. GSDI houses a Data Hub, serving as a nexus point for sharing and utilizing research data from GSDI and collaborating sites in Ghana, South Africa, India, and beyond.
The Project Manager oversees the research projects, personnel, and training provided by GSDI. Responsibilities of this position include comprehensive management of multiple research projects for investigator-initiated and other research studies in coordination with the Global Social Development Innovations (GSDI) Center. The incumbent will oversee planning, implementation, and tracking of all research projects and assist in acquiring additional research grants as required. The candidate will also coordinate and manage relations with partners, funders, and other stakeholders; develop contracts, budgets, and scopes of work. The position will require the hiring and management of research assistants as necessary according to GSDI project needs. The incumbent will report to Dr. Gina Chowa, the Director of GSDI. The incumbent will plan, develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate projects.
This position will be located in Chapel Hill and will require occasional travel overseas, where GSDI has current partnerships and projects.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Documented knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following research areas: youth development, youth economic security, youth workforce development, and youth financial inclusion At least 1 year working experience monitoring research projects or contracts centered on youth development/ economic security (e.g., financial inclusion, workforce development, employment, social protection)
At least 1 year working experience in fiscal management of research grants and contracts. At least 1 year work experience in resource-limited settings (i.e., located in such settings or working on projects in such settings)
*Candidate must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Master's degree in social work, public health, international development, global studies, public administration, or related field (or foreign degree equivalent).
Documented ability to prepare, publish and distribute project reports and updates. Academic research background is preferred.
Prior experience working in or managing relationships with community-based organizations in global and resource-limited settings is strongly preferred. Project management in a global setting and knowledge of current global social, economic and health issues, and their impact on the well-being of individuals, families, and communities is preferred; interest and experience in project work related to economic security and health of vulnerable and marginalized populations in global contexts strongly preferred.
*Experience working with and managing a diverse team is strongly preferred.
