Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The mission of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is to prepare students to ignite the public conversation in our state, the nation and the world, and to understand the role of communication in fostering democracy. The school offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs. Enrollment includes about 1,000 undergraduates and 130 graduate students in addition to professional development and distance education students. Our faculty members are international thought leaders whose scholarly and creative activities are visible and respected in the public realm.

Position Summary The Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking an experienced professional and/or current educator in health communication and marketing to join the faculty and direct the newly established undergraduate health communication and marketing certificate program for a Fall 2024 semester start. This person will contribute to the school’s continued excellence in communication strategy, advertising, and public relations with a focus on health communication and marketing. Candidates will bring professional experience in integrated and data/tech-enabled health communications and marketing and help place the school at the forefront of one of the fastest growing industries in the world.
The Hussman School established the undergraduate health communication certificate program in memory of two-time alumna Lisa Stockman Mauriello (’91, ’13 MA). Lisa’s passion to help people build healthier lives was inspiring and the School is privileged to be part of this enduring extension of her work and vision. Fundraising efforts on behalf of the Legacy for Lisa support the certificate program.
This professor will teach 6 courses per academic year (3 in fall, 3 in spring) including 2 courses each semester as part of the health communication and marketing certificate program and 1 course in advertising or public relations.
Candidates are expected to actively engage with health industry leaders and community partners to connect students with internship opportunities and bring thought leaders into the classroom as well as to develop relationships with other UNC professional schools innovating in the health space. This person is also expected to promote the certificate program to prospective applicants and oversee the admissions process. The director has dedicated programmatic funds at their disposal to support the certificate program.
The faculty member may also be asked to serve on or lead MA (Master of Arts) student thesis committees, in addition to serving on other school committees.
This is a fixed-term permanent faculty position. Depending on experience and education, the successful candidate will be hired as either a Teaching Faculty rank or as a Professor of the Practice.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor’s degree in the same or closely related discipline as the courses taught, such as communication, public relations, advertising, or marketing. Master’s degree in related discipline not required, but strongly preferred.
The successful candidate will bring professional experience in health care communications marketing strategy and campaign execution, including digital media, public relations, and/or advertising, and will bring skills in the creation, execution, and evaluation of communications aimed at improving the health and well-being of patients, caregivers, and the greater community.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience The ability to teach students effectively in the classroom is of great importance. Prior experience in teaching university courses in strategic communication, public relations, advertising, or marketing at the undergraduate or graduate level is preferred. Leading presentations, seminars, or workshops with industry professionals can substitute for prior teaching experience. Candidates are encouraged to submit evidence of effectiveness, whether teaching university courses or presenting to industry professionals.
Experience with the pharmaceutical industry, health systems, managed care, not-for-profits and advocacy organizations is preferred. Demonstrated skills in the use of digital/social media and digital audience research and measurement within strategic programs are a strong plus. Candidates are encouraged to submit a portfolio demonstrating their related prior work.
