Located in Baltimore's cultural center near the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, UMMC Midtown Campus is a 180-bed, community teaching hospital with a focus on helping people manage chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary conditions, and infectious diseases.
Job Description
General Summary
Under general supervision, leads in the overall design and implementation of the unit's education program and facilitates achievement of the highest quality patient care, as measured by positive clinical patient outcomes, and enhanced customer satisfaction. Leads unit governance activities and leads or actively participates in organizational professional governance initiatives. Mentors others to achieve and grow in their profession. Monitors the quality and safety of the education program, leading unit-based audits and continuous quality improvement projects.
Qualifications
Education and Experience

* Bachelor's degree in nursing, nutrition, dietetics, or other healthcare related discipline is required. Master's degree preferred.
* Must hold licensure as a dietitian or nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements as outlined through the Maryland Board of Dietetics/Nursing.
* Must be a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), or Board Certified-Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM).
* Four years' experience as a Diabetic Educator, preferably in a community health or ambulatory care setting.
* Active CPR certification is required.
* Maintains membership in a professional healthcare organization (nutrition, nursing, diabetes or a related field).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to educate patients and their families and work with medical, nursing and management staff. Must have demonstrated ability in public speaking, and the ability to learn and use computer systems.
* Must demonstrate ability to lead others, such as effectiveness as leader of unit/organizational initiatives, charge nurse, mentor, or clinical resource. Demonstrated effectiveness as a multidisciplinary team member
* Must maintain active membership in a relevant professional organization.
* Maintenance of 15 contact hours of education per year.
* Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
