Communications Director
First Baptist Lafayette is in downtown Lafayette, just three blocks from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. From this location, it has been a “witness in Acadiana” for over 118 years. First Baptist Lafayette has seen God’s hand move in a mighty way. Last year, the Church witnessed over 150 baptisms, and this year, the Church is on pace to meet and exceed that number. In addition, last year, the Church received the largest number of contributions in its history and this year is ahead of projections.
First Baptist Lafayette is seeking a Director of Communications, who can serve as a relentless team-oriented staff member, with an emphasis on creative freedom to do your job well and be the expert in your field. Personal, professional, and ultimately spiritual development is baked into their culture with weekly and monthly opportunities to share the Gospel of Christ and reach Acadiana for His glory.
POSITION OBJECTIVE
First Baptist Lafayette is seeking a creative-minded Communications Director to lead the communication needs of the Church and oversee all aspects of their internal and external communications. The individual in this role would be involved in the regular life of the church as any other member would be, along with the responsibilities that come with this role. This person will lead creative direction for videos produced for Sunday services, digital and social media content, website management, and graphic design for various church ministries. The Communications Director will be responsible for weekly communication meetings with ministry leaders, lay leaders, and act as a project manager for open and ongoing communication projects. The Communications Director would report to the Executive Pastor.
The Communications Director will be expected to come in and lead a team confidently, interface with senior church leadership, and creatively lead and execute church projects. Projects will include paid advertising strategy, social media content development, internal and external video production for a ministry activity and/or services, and website design and management.
POSITION KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate to lead the creative vision of projects, assisting in executing and editing them, and delivering projects on time.
- Lead communications meetings with the ministry team.
- Manage and utilize the communications budget effectively.
- Lead and assist in the creation of digital, video, website, social, and print content.
- Develop a brand voice for First Baptist Lafayette and guidelines while maintaining these across all internal and external platforms.
- Establish and drive a multi-channel communications strategy.
- Internalize the culture and priorities of the church.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE NEEDED
- 3+ years of professional communications experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
- Non-profit or ministry experience is a plus.
- Proven ability to be a leader of people and not just a “manager.”
- Experience planning, leading, and executing digital communication projects.
- Ability to cast a creative vision for videos, website design, or marketing collateral.
- Proven track record of hitting deadlines with high-quality deliverables.
- Confidence to interface and lead conversations with senior-level leaders in the church
- Familiarity with social media platforms and social media marketing
- Forward-thinker, always setting the pace.
- Possess a naturally curious mindset, always looking for problems to solve or avoid.
- Be a servant leader in and outside of the church.
- Live a life of Christian faith that makes a positive impact in the community.
Major Responsibilities:
- Lead in the planning, conducting, coordinating, and evaluating of communications for ministry activities, services, and extraordinary events.
- Manage the brand and reputation of First Baptist Lafayette
- Develop internal and external publications such as newsletters, releases, church digital communications (i.e emails, videos, etc.), planned publications, online, intranet, video, special projects, and assignments.
- Take advantage of the opportunities to feature First Baptist Lafayette on local radio, TV, or the Internet.
- Provide creative direction of Communications for internal and external purposes in coordination with the Senior Pastor.
- Maintain Communications assets and collateral and update current assets and collateral.
- Provide creative mentoring and support all ministries.
- Assist in discovering, enlisting, and training future leaders for ministry.
- Work with and lead the staff in creative development and planning Communications.
- Develop and manage Communication’s budget and help ministries develop communication-related budget resources for respective ministries.
General duties:
- Serve as staff liaison for assigned church committees and ministry teams.
- Keep informed on methods, materials, principles, procedures, promotions, and administration related to communications, social media, print media,
- Cooperate with associational, state, and national programs and leaders. Be involved as time permits, giving priority to the church.
- Maintain openness to innovative ideas and flexibility in adopting new strategies of social media engagement, internal and external communications, ministry promotion,
- Provide support when needed to other departments with “all hands-on deck” ministries (i.e. Vacation Bible School).
- Be present and available to support all church-wide services (Sunday AM/PM and Wednesday PM) and events.
- Work with other ministry staff when responsibilities overlap.
- Perform other duties and assignments as requested by the Senior Pastor.
Working Conditions
- The Communications Director shall be responsible as an employee to the Senior Pastor, through the Executive Pastor, in all matters related to employment. The Director of Communications will coordinate and cooperate with ministerial staff to discharge all duties and responsibilities.
- Observe regular office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except as required by the needs of the carrying out of assigned responsibilities or as provided in the general personnel policies.
- Vacation, holidays, and other circumstances related to working conditions are determined by general personnel policies.
- The Executive Pastor must approve participation in conferences, conventions, and outside performances.

- Be a Christian of high moral character who has demonstrated loyalty to God, the church, and his Pastor, and who expresses a call to the ministry.
- Able and willing to sign FBC Lafayette’s Staff Covenant.

- Has demonstrated a high level of confidentiality concerning all areas of ministry, especially personal contributions, benevolence, and personal information.
