General Summary

An ideal full-time Upper School Mathematics Teacher is dynamic, has the ability to teach all levels of mathematics courses from Algebra I through Calculus, and is interested in developing strong problem-solving and communication competencies in students. The teacher will work with math students in grades 9 - 12.

Essential Functions

TEACHING AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT:

Inspiring, engaging, and encouraging students in the study of mathematics

Valuing, promoting, and developing the importance of effort and grit in students’ academic achievement; celebrating students’ effort and their incremental increases in achievement

Working in a student-centered learning environment

Incorporating student use of technology in solving problems and analyzing data

INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION:

Working closely with colleagues teaching the same courses to ensure the same content coverage and ensure similar student experiences

Becoming an active member of the McDonogh community by participating in school activities inside and outside of the mathematics department

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND CONTRIBUTION:

Mentoring a small group of students as an advisor in an advisory program as well as students inside the computer science classroom

Overtly supporting and acting in accordance with the school's mission

Exhibiting professional standards of presentation, punctuality, professional courtesy, and discretion

Responding to the needs of the School, including but not limited to, service learning, advisory programs, coaching, assigned supervision, and other areas as determined by the Head of the Upper School

Prior experience teaching Mathematics is preferred

Using professional growth opportunities to continually grow as a mathematics educator, including but not limited to, observing classes taught by colleagues both within and outside of the mathematics department

Recommended Employment Qualifications

Master’s Degree (preferred, but not required).

Additional Experience

Subject matter expertise required, preferably through second-year Calculus including the ability to incorporate data analysis into math courses.

Proficient in the use of technology tools, including but not limited to the use of calculators, Google Sheets, and a LMS

Experience with computer science and the ability to incorporate computer science thinking into math classrooms is a plus

Additional Requirements

Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion

Ability to successfully work with and within a culturally diverse student body, staff, and community

Exhibits a strong work ethic

Must be able to comply with background check, including finger prints, as required by the agency and / or state regulations.

Must possess personal qualifications as required, flexibility, patience, good personal hygiene and physical and mental health that do not interfere with responsibilities.

Working Conditions

Lifting and carrying of equipment is not typical, but may be required on rare occasions. Other working conditions include climbing stairs, walking around campus, sitting, standing, and significant computer use including extensive close use of a computer monitor. Reaching, grasping.
