The Salinas Police Department invites  candidates looking to serve their community or begin a career in law enforcement to apply for this exciting opportunity. 

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:  All applicants must provide proof of education at the time of application. The City of Salinas will accept copies of high school diplomas, GEDs, college degrees, or unofficial transcripts as proof of education.  Applications are incomplete without the required documents.

Summary of Duties : Under direct supervision assist in performing a wide variety of office law enforcement work which does not require officer training, authority or experience.

Distinguishing Characteristics : This is the entry-level class in the police support paraprofessional series. Incumbents perform routine field and desk tasks with direction.

Supervision Received and Exercised:   Receives direct supervision from assigned higher-level sworn personnel, and general supervision from other personnel as directed. Exercises no supervision.

  1. Serves as a desk aide taking telephone or in-person reports of criminal incidents.
  2. Receives and processes abandoned vehicle notices.
  3. Supports or assists in crime prevention efforts, community relations and technical support duties with sworn personnel, including non-emergency crime report writing, processing online reports, data entry, general clerical tasks
  4. Delivers mail and/or miscellaneous information to City Hall, City departments, or other agencies
  5. Maintains paperwork, files, and accurate logs and recording of data.
  6. Sorts incoming and outgoing U.S and interoffice mail for the department; ensures proper and accurate distribution to departments and appropriate personnel.
  7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education:  High School Diploma/GED

 

Experience:  Work experience which sufficiently demonstrates the capability to learn and perform the full range of position duties.

 

Licenses and Certifications:  A valid State of California Driver’s License.

 

Special Requirement: Applicants must be 18 years or older by hire date. Prior to appointment, all candidates must pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph exam.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions This position requires a combination of field and office work, moving in and out of a vehicle or assisting with traffic control. Assignments may require standing for long periods of time. Fieldwork requires a tolerance for all types of weather conditions, heat, rain, fog, day and evening shifts. Business office environment subject to sitting at a desk or standing at a counter for long periods of time. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, tablet or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person, over the telephone and two-way radio. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

May be subject to verbal and physically abusive behavior, threats, and insults from the public. Potentially be in contact with persons that carry weapons and communicable diseases. May be ordered-in to provide staff coverage per the needs of the department. Some assignments may require a shift work schedule to include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Will be required to work special events. Promote and maintain safety in the workplace.
