The C-WMD Systems Group develops innovative systems and technologies for prevention, preparedness, characterization, detection, mitigation, medical response, remediation, and attribution of CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive) and related threats. Our principal R&D sponsors are the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. Our mission-oriented staff members work in collaborative project teams to study and develop solutions for a broad range of technical questions of importance to countering the proliferation and use of WMDs. Job Description

As a Research Co-Op you will work with your team to address key stakeholder needs and further the Group’s mission through a collaboratively-designed summer research project, e.g., in:

• Computational biology AI models for protein property prediction.
• Development and testing of novel sensor systems to identify and interdict chemical, biological, and explosive threats.
• Empirical and computational models of the transport of contaminants in various environments.
• Use of technology and architecture concepts to aid in situational awareness and decision support.
• Monitoring of population pathogen levels through wastewater characterization.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in either graduate (Masters or PhD) or undergraduate (Bachelors) studies in an engineering, scientific, or mathematical field. For undergraduates, completion of junior year toward B.S., B.E. or B.A. is preferred.
• Familiarity and/or experience in areas such as biology/biotechnology, software development, artificial intelligence and other data analytics algorithms, applied mathematical models and simulations with respect to real world problems.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with highly interdisciplinary teams. Successful candidates have a high level of motivation, strong desire for collaboration, and deep respect for their colleagues.
• Interest and ability to consistently learn and apply new things to solve national security challenges.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background investigation and obtain / maintain a minimum of a Secret-level DoD security clearance.
