Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Instruction Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), provides administrative supervision and oversight for STEM instructional programs and researches the viability of new programs and their implementation. Provides leadership in teaching excellence and student learning with the goal of student success and continuous improvement of STEM programs. Responsible for all administrative, academic, and fiscal matters of assigned programs. The Dean is responsible for the quality and integrity of all aspects of these academic and instructional programs, and the supervision of program directors, department chairs, faculty and classified staff.

Education and Experience: Required a minimum of a Master's degree in any of the core disciplines of STEM. Desired a doctorate (Ph.D. or Add). Degree(s) must be from an accredited institution(s).

EXPERIENCE:
Required a minimum of four years of successful full-time teaching experience in higher education, preferably in a community college. Required at least three years of management and/or senior level leadership experience in a postsecondary educational institution. Preferred teaching, curriculum and administrative experience in the core areas of the position

Desirable qualifications:
Demonstrated successful experience using data, surveys and student/community input to develop new and revise existing curriculum; Prior teaching experience in one or more of the areas to which the Dean position is assigned; Demonstrated successful experience meeting deadlines. Demonstrated ability to plan and establish structures, systems, and processes to reach goals and objectives with initiative and to completion; Demonstrated successful experience acquiring program or institutional resources and facilitating between local and regional education, business and industry partnerships; Demonstrated successful experience leading programs related to the administrative assignment, including: strategic planning and decision making; strategic enrollment management, class scheduling, staffing, evaluation and supervision; and developing and managing budgets.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Higher education in community colleges; applicable laws, codes, regulations and District policies and procedures; current principles and practices of administration, supervision and training; budget preparation and processes; curriculum development; policies, objectives and contemporary practices in the core areas of the position

ABILITY TO:
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a participatory manner with all segments of the college community and community at large; lead, implement and manage change; apply technological applications to daily work; interpret and uniformly implement district policies and procedures and the college bargaining agreements. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; manage staff; work collaboratively with other administrators, and academic department chairs and faculty; work effectively in shared governance and consensus building settings; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; evaluate and support faculty recommendations for program improvements or new service efforts; promote diversity inclusion, equity and academic excellence; advocate for the academic programs to which assigned; identify alternate funding resources and develop grant or special projects applications

Duties and Responsibilities:

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Provides campus leadership and coordination in support of area of supervision.

2. Conducts needs analyses, student surveys and other research to identify viable and sustainable courses, programs and majors not currently offered and works collaboratively with deans, department chairs, faculty and other relevant staff or external agencies to implement quality programs into the curriculum and schedule of classes.

3. In consultation with the Vice President of Academic Affairs, oversees and participates in the improvement of instruction process for full and part-time faculty under the area of supervision.

4. In consultation with the Vice President of Academic Affairs and department chairs, responds to student concerns and inquires under the area of supervision.

5. Advises the Vice President of Academic Affairs of short-term and long­ term impacts of new program offerings.

6. Researches the necessary skills needed for emerging job classifications which are prominent throughout the campus service area.

7. Works with and establishes partnerships to identify emerging STEM programs and trends. Works collaboratively with relevant programs and faculty to develop partnerships and linkages with industry, and community in the procurement of internship and apprenticeship opportunities.

8. Provides leadership for the Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA) Program.

9. Provides leadership and support for the iMake Innovation Center MakerSpace.

10.Supports and promotes curriculum development by faculty to respond to student and community needs, including establishment and use of learning outcomes at the course and programmatic level, and ensures the assessment of said outcomes.

10.Develops and maintains relationships with four-year colleges and universities, K-12, regional occupational education institutions, and appropriate community-based organizations related to STEM.

11.Provides leadership in identifying outside funding opportunities for STEM and new program offerings. Coordinates the procurement and distribution of grant funds by preparing grant applications, budgets and reports for local, state and federal grant supported programs.

12.Prepares relevant grants and ensures that existing and new program related grants are managed according to grant guidelines.

13.Prepares and submits all related financial reports and budgets in a timely manner under the area of supervision.

14.Plans and administers program budget and expenditures as required under the area of supervision.

15.Provides leadership to faculty and managers regarding new program approvals under area of supervision.

17.Assists in the promotion and marketing of the college image and instructional programs in the college service area.

18.Serves on campus-wide committees relevant to strategic enrollment management, strategic planning, student learning outcomes, budget development and management, program review, and program advisory groups, and others as required.

19.Assists with the institutional accreditation process and accreditation processes for individual programs under the area of supervision as needed.

20.Maintains an understanding of current ideas, trends, research and practices pertaining to the areas of responsibility for this position, through continued study and participation in professional organizations.

Conditions of Employment: CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is an Academic Management position with twelve-month contracts. Paid vacation, 22 days annually; and paid accruable sick leave, 12 days annually. A pro-rata reduction will be made for employees working less than full-time and less than 12 months. The District provides a health and welfare benefit package for employees and legal qualifying dependents.

The work location and assignment within a job classification is determined by the District and may be subject to change.
