Compensation and Benefits
$54,000 – $67,000 | Salary is negotiable dependent upon experience.

Position Overview
Reporting to the Director of Product Advancement, the Tactile Graphic Artist 2 will contribute to the product advancement process by adapting images to accessible tactile graphic formats, aiding in the maintenance of styles and standards of tactile access, and creating, editing, and maintaining other content for Education Products Innovation Department. The Tactile Graphic Artist 2 will generally work under the guidance of a Product Manager, while also exercising independent discretion in tasks such as conducting product ideation reviews.
This position is based in Louisville, Kentucky, and allows a hybrid work schedule.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop, modify, and implement tactile graphics styles and standards according to contract specifications.
- Maintain a storage and catalog system, including global library, for electronic graphics (Tactile Graphic Image Library).
- Assist in the design and execution of a training program for training and supervising new tactile graphics artists at APH.
- Conduct quality reviews and repair tactile graphic designs.
- Work independently or in collaboration with others to support the development or modernization of APH products, typically under the supervision of an APH product manager, ensuring adherence to accessibility standards and educational requirements.
- Independently analyze data from user feedback, publisher feedback, and other sources to inform graphic development decisions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to generate content for new products, ensuring it aligns with educational guidelines and addresses specific needs of blind or low vision students.
- Exercise independent discretion in conducting graphic reviews, providing valuable insights and suggestions for improvement.
- Stay informed about advancements in braille, tactile graphics, project management, process improvement, or other technical knowledge relevant to the field.
- Correspond with expert reviewers, publisher team members, consultants, and teachers.
- Represent APH at conferences, trade shows, and other events, presenting information about products and engaging with potential customers and partners.
- Ability to travel up to 10 days per year.
Education, Training, and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design preferred; a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, Fine Arts or Humanities is acceptable provided the candidate has verifiable experience in graphic design.
- Five years of experience as a tactile graphic artist.
- Demonstrated experience in training and supervising others is not required but preferred.
- Substantive experience in developing tactile graphics for students who are blind or low vision required. Successful candidate must be capable of quickly learning braille codes, formatting, Braille translation software, etc.
- Ability to effectively communicate an understanding of the difference between visual and tactual perceptions.
- Demonstrated or verifiable training in the use of computer drawing software (e.g., CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand) required.
- Demonstrated experience in collage tooling, microcapsule paper, and computer-generated graphics.
- Specialized technical knowledge in areas such as braille, product management, curriculum development, process improvement, or data analysis is required.
- Familiarity with accessibility guidelines, standards, and best practices for blind or visually impaired learners is required.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and user feedback to drive graphic improvements.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of effectively conveying complex ideas to diverse audiences.
- Attention to detail and ability to perform detail-oriented tasks like graphic interpretation and copy editing, and review tasks with accuracy and efficiency.
- Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
- Passion for improving educational opportunities and experiences for blind or visually impaired students and adults.
- Strong writing, word processing, and database management skills required.
- Experience with screen readers (such as JAWS, NVDA) is a plus, but not required.
- Must have an advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Must have working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, SharePoint, Teams, Zoom, and internet browsers.
- Special Requirement: Must be able to submit three samples of original tactile graphic design or work upon request.
