OVERVIEW:


The Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN/APN) in Urology is a registered nurse prepared at a master's doctorate level as a Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist. The APN will primarily manage the primary and secondary care conditions and evaluate tertiary conditions. APN's assumes authority, responsibility, and accountability for the delivery of nursing services within their assigned AUS facility. The APN's goal is to increase patient access to quality health care by providing nursing expertise in diagnosis and treatment to prevent, remediate, or alleviate illness and promote health, thus, resulting in improved patient outcomes. The APN utilizes an interdisciplinary team approach to ensure the highest quality standards of care.

The APN will work closely with their respective physicians in their group while ensuring that each office adheres to the AUS Corporate Mission, Core Values and all corporate policies that may change over time.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/NATURE AND SCOPE: Whether directly or through a management team, the Advanced Practice Nurse is responsible and accountable for the following:

1. Is authorized to prescribe and dispense medication when granted authority in accordance with State licensure.

2. Collect, order, and interpret lab work and diagnostic studies under agreed upon protocols.

3. Order therapies necessary treatments required to diagnose patient

4. May obtain comprehensive health histories and perform complete physical examinations, develop differential diagnoses, develop and implement plans of care, evaluate and document client's response to plan of care.

5. May provide patient and/or family education.

6. May organize referrals and/or consultations when appropriate.

7. Will participate in research as requested.

8. Will promote cost effective delivery of care.

9. Participates in daily or weekly management team meetings to discuss staff statuses, census changes, personnel or patient complaints.

10. Collaborates with physicians, consultants, community agencies, and institutions to improve the quality of clinical services and to resolve identified problems.

11. Coordinates nursing services with all other departments including therapy

12. Promotes customer service and responds to and adequately resolves complaints or concerns from patients and their families about the SBU's clinical services

13. Role-model, consult, and educate clinical personnel to improve nursing practice and thus improve patient outcomes

14. Provide leadership in the development of evidenced-based policies, procedures and protocols, and best practice guidelines

15. Lead interdisciplinary groups to implement innovative patient care programs that address patient needs across the full continuum of care.

16. Promote a proactive role in system redesign to support safety for patients and staff.

17. Contribute to staff knowledge of ethical issues of this patient population.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION:

Graduate from a recognized college or university with a Master's Degree Program prepared as a Nurse Practitioner Nursing. Current DEA license within the state of IL. Certification as a Urology Nurse is preferred. CPR certification is required; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) a plus. Post Graduate Diploma in Urology Nursing preferable. Participation in continuing education. Yearly OSHA and CLIA training will also be required. Must have a Registered Nursing license in good standing within the State of Illinois.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The Advanced Practice Nurse must have a minimum of 2 years of professional nursing experience, preferably in a urology practice setting. A minimum of 3 years in nursing administration or a comparable management position. The APN must have a valid IL license as a registered Nurse and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Certified as a Urology Nurse Practitioner. Must possess and demonstrate a high degree of leadership, organizational ability, and communication skills. Knowledge of current federal and state laws and regulations that apply to the practice of nursing in a urology setting. Has strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize responsibilities. Ability to define problems and collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Consultation and collaboration are essential skills for APN's as they are for all members of the healthcare team.
