Purpose of the Position

Cultivate, Manage, and mentor estimating team to win bids, optimize profit margins, and estimate efficiently.  Providing job performance feedback, driving direction of the department, and analyzing data and estimating processes of profitability are important functions of this position.  This position is also responsible for the build out of a strong professional estimating department and to review types of jobs and projects to align with the strategic plan.  

Major Objectives

30 days: Familiarized with current procedures, processes, services provided, operating programs, the leadership team, and team members.

3 months – 1 years: Objectively identify and address areas lacking efficiencies, analysis of current SOPs, bring recommendations for department structure/growth, continually engaging in team development.

1 year +: Implement strategies to increase efficiencies (standardization) within estimating department. Increase levels of communication with the estimating department as well as communication between estimating and other departments. Foster a healthy and productive culture within the estimating department. Run and analyze profit margins and wins and losses. Engage in annual strategic planning to identify projects that are in alignment with the current strategic plan to improve profit margins, increase wins, minimize loses, or to adjust the strategic plan to meet current demands KPIs.

Attributes and Behaviors necessary to do a great job?

This person will need to approach every day with an enthusiastic attitude and a resilient demeanor. The estimating group may feel the toll of consecutive loses if having lost multiple bids in a row. This person will need to be able to know how to improve moral through the use of their attitude and demeanor. A Director of Estimating will need to be able to communicate clearly and concisely with those both inside and outside of the department. A Director of Estimating will need to understand the numbers and how they impact other departments.

Experience required and/or preferred?

Persons in this position will need to have 10+ years working as part of an estimating department(s). It would be preferred that this person has experience working in the steel fabricating industry but is not absolutely required so long as they can demonstrate their ability to understand the market and/or show how their experience will translate. MBA, Engineer, AISC background a plus!

What would it take to be a good fit?

This person must promote a strongly, healthy work ethic that’s central to productivity but not burnout. This person must be willing to support and invest time and mentorship to each member of the estimating department. Cultivate a team-oriented mentality and work closely with executive team. Be willing to respectfully challenge peers and team members while pushing us out of our comfort zone in a professional manner!

This person should value honesty, transparency, a strong work ethic, and high-level communication skills.
