Cantonese Ministerial Assistant

Location

Seattle, WA | United States

Job description

The founding of our church is a testimony of how God uses all things for good.  In 1882, the US Congress established the Chinese Exclusion Act. On Sunday, February 7, 1886, violent mobs forcibly removed Chinese families from their homes and led them to board a steamship leaving Seattle for China.  “The Rev. A.B. Banks on receiving word during a worship service that a racist mob was gathering to attack Chinese immigrants, pronounced the benediction, grabbed his rifle, and rushed off to join the Home Guards defending the Chinese.” Following the “Seattle Riot of 1886” members of Rev. A.B. Bank’s church decided to teach English and the Bible to the Chinese. In 1896, the Chinese Mission was formally organized. In 1902, Chinese Mission became the Chinese Baptist Church and funds were raised to purchase land and build a new building at 625 Washington St. Since that time we relocated twice: 925 S. King St. (1922) and 5801 Beacon Ave S. (1976). Today, the church has two worship services. The English-speaking worship at 9:30 AM and the Cantonese-speaking worship at 11:00 AM.
