Job description
We are seeking a highly motivated Director of Laboratory Operations with hands-on experience to manage the Atlantic Consolidated Laboratory , a high volume clinical reference laboratory supporting Atlantic Health System based in Morristown, NJ.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Laboratory Operations Director will be responsible for providing overall direction of the Atlantic Consolidated Laboratory. They will direct the technical day-to-day laboratory operation which includes the general technical supervision and development of laboratory managers/supervisors, assures that quality standards are being met, provides technical expertise to the laboratory and as needed, serves as the liaison to various internal and external entities. The Laboratory Operations Director ensures that the laboratory and the laboratory staff is in compliance with all laws and regulations that are required by CLIA, CAP, OSHA and any other applicable legislative organizations.
The director will provide oversight to an employee mix of up to 200 technical and operational team members, including supervisors and managers. The primary focus is to be able to oversee laboratory processes, be responsible for assisting in the development of and executing strategic business priorities, ensuring adequate personnel and resources and drive innovation to realize operational efficiencies. The Lab Director will be accountable for achieving laboratory performance metrics, fostering leadership development, and inspiring an engaged workforce.
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 9:00am- 5:00pm
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Direct operational activities of the Clinical (Core Lab, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular, Cytology, Histology) departments, including technical and non-technical operations
- Personnel – Responsible for the management (oversight) of Lab Operations Managers
- Capital and Operating Expense – Will work in collaboration with the Executive Director and Finance to prepare annual capital and operational budgets. Will be responsible for maintaining expenses and revenue within the established fiscal year budget, reviews rates and procedure codes for all departments under directorship
- Performance Improvement and Quality Management – Assure compliance with appropriate accrediting agencies such as that CAP, CLIA, NJDOH, TJC, OSHA, etc.
- Performance and Productivity – Maintains accurate statistics to show productivity, performance indicators, quality management, etc. Ensure that testing systems performed in the laboratory provide quality laboratory services for all aspects of the test, which include pre-analytic, analytic and post analytic phases
- Directly responsible for operational policy and procedure development for all related departments under directorship
- Serve as a laboratory representative on designated hospital committees as required. (i.e.: Infection Control, Blood Utilization Committee, Quality Management, Safety Committee, etc.
- Oversee the implementation of new methodologies, instrumentation, and quality control
- Collaborate with the chair of pathology, medical directors, QA laboratory managers, other laboratory directors and corporate operations
- Oversee laboratory audits, with accountability to implement corrective, preventative, and effectiveness actions for findings and deficiencies
- Oversee training, mentorship and talent development and employee engagement initiatives, ensuring policies and procedures are followed
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Technology or a related life science, Master’s Degree (MBA, MHA, MS) preferred
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in a high complexity testing in CLIA/CAP environment preferably with large areas of responsibility including five (5) years Administrative and Leadership (supervisory/managerial) clinical laboratory experience required
- ASCP, AMT, or other laboratory certifications required
- Prior demonstrated successful experience in a multi structured health care institution or larger commercial laboratory
- Previous experience working in an autonomous environment with a high degree of accountability
- Prior experience in developing budgets
- Skillful knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, Laboratory Information Systems and Hospital Health Care Management Systems
- Demonstrated experience in quality systems, project management, and regulatory compliance with CAP, CLIA, JCAHO, OSHA, EPA Accrediting Agency standards
- Demonstrated experience with CMS, Press Ganey and HCAHPS in relation to patient satisfaction
- Ability to function independently and as a member of a large team; motivate personnel to achieve excellence; work with multiple leadership and staffing levels to achieve quality management goals
- Ability to investigate, analyze information/data and draw conclusions
- Ability to develop and present educational and training programs
- Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining positive professional relationships with physicians, employees, peers and organizational leaders
- Ability to problem solve and provide solutions under minimal supervision
- High level of attention to detail with strong organizational skills
