HJF is seeking a Clinical Pharmacist  to perform duties as a Clinical Pharmacist in direct support of the pharmaceutical healthcare of patients in conjunction with one or more specified clinical research protocols at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, in Bethesda, Maryland.

This position will be in support of the Murtha Cancer Center Research Program (MCCRP) & Hematology Oncology clinics located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, in Bethesda, Maryland. The Murtha Cancer Center is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer-trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies.

• The incumbent works as a clinical pharmacist in an outpatient/inpatient setting in support of the Murtha Cancer Center Research Program & Hem/Onc clinics. As a clinical pharmacist, the incumbent supports a full scope of healthcare services for patients with both acute and chronic illnesses and conditions managing the entire spectrum of pharmacotherapy.
• The Clinical Pharmacist provides support to the facility in a variety of pharmacy benefit management functions that provide integrated support to the direct care and purchased care components within the DoD pharmacy benefit.
• The incumbent accomplishes special quality assurance studies and performs pharmacoeconomic analyses.
• The clinical pharmacist serves as a consultant on cases involving multiple, serious, or life-threatening conditions with conflicting drug requirements, serious drug reactions or interactions, or other factors not receptive to standard or more common specialized approaches.
• Supervises and conducts ward orientation for new medical, nursing, allied health, and pharmacy students, interns, and residents as they provide care diagnosis and treatment to patients.
• The incumbent assesses the physical and psychological health status of patients and/or their families through history-taking and physical examination IAW established protocols and references.
• The incumbent serves as a patient and family advocate. Receives, investigates, and acts on patient complaints.
• The incumbent develops and conducts health promotional services and serves in a teaching/coaching capacity in the development of other health care workers.
• The incumbent serves as an expert on pharmaceuticals, pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutics and applies extensive and intensive knowledge and experience with drugs and other pharmaceuticals available, their nature, action, and interaction, and provides authoritative instructions, advice, and assistance in prescribing and dispensing officials in the MTF on effectiveness, suitability, hazards, and other aspects of their use.
• The incumbent responds to requests from the medical staff, outlying pharmacists, and medical staff personnel, participates in, conducts, or reviews studies involving complex pharmacotherapeutic regimens.
• The incumbent and physicians develop pharmacotherapeutic regimens for especially difficult or complex cases.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  

• Expert knowledge of evaluative, analytical, investigative, qualitative, and quantitative techniques to conduct review and analysis of pharmacoeconomic issues such as cost effectiveness, cost minimization, quality life-years, overall drug therapy costs, budget forecasting, review of automated ordering in order to evaluate performance pricing and arrive at valid recommendations and policies.
• Exercises skill in planning, organizing, and directing outcomes of research studies and economic analyses within the pharmacy and advises the management of budget and program implications.
• Knowledge of complex pharmacological protocols to include use, method of administration, dosing, schedule, adverse reactions, and complications for acute episodic and chronic illnesses.
• Mastery to apply experimental theories and new developments to the resolution of complex healthcare not susceptible to treatment by accepted methods; or to make decisions or recommendations significantly changing or developing protocols.
• Knowledge of the full range of professional medical principles and practices and their application to provide a broad range of direct primary health care services (e.g., recognize signs and symptoms of illness, interpret lab results, and assess patients' medical conditions and health maintenance status.).
• Knowledge and ability to apply emergency and resuscitative measures. Independently make decisions and implements proper emergency measures after identifying and interpreting life-threatening conditions. Initiates life-saving measures, which include, but are not limited to, basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, calculating dosages and mixing potent and potentially lethal drugs and administering these drugs.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Exercises professionalism and excellent customer service qualities.
• Skill and ability to utilize various automated systems to include MHS Genesis, NEXiA , Outlook, ScriptPro, and Pyxis.
• High level of interpersonal skills to work closely with patients and the MTF staff. Skill in the utilization of good human relationship principals and techniques to resolve issues and ensure successful implementation of proposals. Skill in briefing techniques

Work Environment   

• This position will take place primarily in an office, clinic, or hospital setting.

Education and Experience  

• Doctoral degree - PharmD
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience required.

Licenses and Certifications

• Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Certification preferred.

Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
