Project Overview:

Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world's largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era. The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE's most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities - Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High­ Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory - as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities. The High-Level Waste (HLW) Facility is the most complex of all the WTP facilities. The HLW will vitrify (process into glass) the highest concentrations of radioactive and chemical waste located on the Hanford site. HLW staff consist of top professionals who are designing, planning, and procuring all materials necessary to construct HLW vitrification systems. This industrial Safety Specialist position will support and assist the HLW team to complete the HLW mission and commission the operations of this one-of-a-kind facility. This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work weekends as needed. 

Position Summary:

Under management supervision, the Industrial Hygiene Specialist II is responsible for implementing and administering project industrial hygiene programs affecting employee, public safety and occupational health.

Serves as a resource for line management to administer a proactive prevention program for occupational accidents and illnesses; under general supervision performs technical work in a wide range of industrial hygiene disciplines to achieve compliance with ES&H standards along with federal and state regulatory requirements;exhibits knowledge and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of industrial hygiene; assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of industrial hygiene programs, systems and procedures; monitors and prevents hazards and diseases that could be found in the work area; investigates accidents, injuries, and complaints concerning hazards in the workplace; recommends improvements in processes, design, procedures and operating equipment to minimize hazards; conducts employee training, emergency preparedness and assures the quality of programs; provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice; may provide guidance for a team of ES&H specialists and/or support personnel. This position may require shift work to support plant operations.
