Job Summary:
The Lead Pharmacy Technician performs, under supervision, a variety of technical duties related to the preparation and dispensing of drugs according to standard procedures and current regulations. The Lead supports the Assistant Director and Director of Pharmacy by guiding daily pharmacy technician operations and ensures that other technicians have the resources and training necessary to perform their job effectively.
In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Pharmacy and the Director of Pharmacy, the Lead takes a leadership role with the Pyxis automation system to prevent errors which can impact patient safety, loss of revenue, undesirable inventory levels, and problems reconciling controlled drug dispensing records. The Lead is the main point of contact for Pyxis related issues and Pyxis maintenance, draw configuration, and optimization. The Lead maintains integrity of automated medication dispensing equipment, and serves as the main back up to the Pharmacy Inventory Analyst when they are out.
Essential Job Functions:
- Provides guidance to pharmacy technicians for efficient pharmacy operations.
- Assists in the training of other Pharmacy Technicians (initial and ongoing).
- Assists in developing Pharmacy Procedures
- Develops and maintains integrity of automated medication dispensing equipment which includes monthly inspection on machine drawers, refrigerator, and tower for missing cubies.
- Performs daily optimization of automated medication dispensing equipment including replacement of cubie pockets when broken.
- Provides technical support for the automated medication dispensing equipment
- Main contact to establish cases with Pyxis through BD portal for such things as broken cubies, failed drawers, etc.). Registers with BD CareFusion for access to their portal.
- Establishes an account with BD Analytics in order to run metric reports for optimization (i.e. medications not used in 6 months).
- Daily review and Pyxis load of all medications that are not standard stock in Pyxis following established ratio guidelines.
- Daily review and oversight of rotation and newly received stock and IV room supplies and medications.
- Monitors technician assignments to ensure tasks are completed on time. (Pyxis fill and IV deliveries)
- Monitors offsite dialysis units for Retacrit refills and antibiotics expiring to avoid waste.
- Twice weekly monitoring and ordering of IV solutions and IV room supplies.
- Assists the Assistant Director of Pharmacy with input into performance evaluations for pharmacy technicians
- Assists the Assistant Director and Director of Pharmacy if counseling is needed for performance deficits.
- Assists with Inventory control including checking stock for expiration dates and proper storage
- Operates unit dose packaging equipment
- Completes all competence/skills assessment requirements.
- Works cooperatively with all staff. Voices concerns and suggestions to the appropriate persons in a professional manner.
- Demonstrates proficiency in all required operating systems.
- Works independently with minimal supervision. Organizes and prioritizes work assignments. Ensures pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner. Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
- Demonstrates the ability to address problems in a group setting using tools and techniques for identification and resolution of problems.
- Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety or quality of care
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the Pharmacy Management in accordance with established facility hospital policies
- Performs Pharmacy Purchasing duties in the absence of the Pharmacy Inventory Analyst and assures compliance with all 340B regulations.
- Assures procedures and documentation requirements are met for expired medications including monitoring of recall software.
- Ensures the expired medications from the Reverse Distributor are delivered to receiving department.
- Responds to conflict discreetly and appropriately.
- Accepts and supports change and new ideas.
- Model employee for regular, punctual and dependable attendance.
- Willingness to staff when needed.
- Willingness to stay late to see a Pyxis issue to completion.
- Willingness to work some established weekends and evenings for more exposure to staff issues.
Job Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Technician training program preferred
- National Certification (CPhT) required. Active Registered pharmacy technician, as per State requirements, in good standing with the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy
- Minimum 5 years of experience in an acute care setting. Pyxis experience preferred.
- Experience with state, federal and regulatory requirements preferred
- Computer skills, proficient in the use of graphic programs, word processing, spreadsheet manipulation and database programs
