Job description
Summary
The Biopsy Tech is responsible for performing accurate gross description and routine, uncomplicated surgical dissection procedures on tissue samples including core biopsies, margins, small biopsies, bone marrows, curettings, gallbladder, appendix, fallopian tubes, placenta, etc. according to established protocols.
Excellent analytical and communication skills are required to direct or provide information to clients, clinicians, or hospital divisions which will directly impact patient care.
Maintains equipment and supplies as needed.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the accurate gross description, dissection on routine, uncomplicated tissue specimens according to established protocols
- Performs all technical aspects of grossing and dictating tissue specimens using a variety of laboratory materials and equipment under direct supervisor of Pathologist or Pathologist Assistant
- Ensures specimen integrity upon arrival and throughout the entire process
- Dictates a gross description for each specimen including, but not limited to anatomical site, size, color, weight, dimensions, count, volume, cut techniques, abnormal findings, orient skin excisions, ink, dissects and prepares tissue for cassettes
- Escalates non-routine complicated specimens to the Pathologist Assistant
- Maintains accurate work records
- Prepares dissected tissue specimens and places them into cassettes
- Loads prepared cassettes into Tissue Processors and starts the processor
- Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance Procedures
- Assist with the ordering and accessioning of specimens
- Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed
- Operates and cleans laboratory equipment if needed
- Disposes of hazardous chemical wastes per regulatory guidelines
- Maintains strictest confidentiality
- Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, policies, and procedural manuals
- Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Perform assigned duties accurately, efficiently and effectively in a timely manner. Actively seek out other assignments when daily tasks are completed.
- Contact physician’s offices or nursing staff for additional info concerning incomplete requisitions.
- Fill out paperwork for QA.
- Maintain QA/QC charts including taking temperatures.
- Stock supplies such as gloves, containers, cassettes, etc.
- May be rotated through the Histology Lab as needed to perform Histology technical procedures such as embedding and/or microtomy
Education and Training:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological, Chemical or Life Science required
- Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnology program.
- Certified as HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) preferred
- Ability to work independently and complete projects in a timely manner.
Experience/Skills Required
- Ability to write clear and concise procedures and policies
- Skillful knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, Laboratory Information Systems and Hospital Health Care Management Systems
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to investigate, analyze information/data and draw conclusions
- Requires a high level of organizational and time management skills.
