Organizational Overview:
Working toward United Way of Pierce County’s (UWPC) bold goal of lifting 15,000 households out of poverty by 2028 this role fits within the department of community impact and reports to the Vice President of Community Impact. This multifaceted role is dedicated to designing, implementing, and advocating for the Growing Resilience In Tacoma (GRIT) guaranteed basic income demonstration. This role oversees all aspects of the GRIT demonstration and supports community impact colleagues in designing impact and community events.
GRIT began in 2021 under the leadership of Mayor Victoria Woodards, a founding member of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI) and United Way of Pierce County. December 2021-December 2022 GRIT gifted 110 different Tacoma families $500 a month, no-strings-attached. Following a recent investment from the State, GRIT is set to continue into the years to come. GRIT is intended not only to stimulate financial wellness in Tacoma but also to advocate for human-centered policies across the country and to stimulate a positive change in the public narrative of poverty.
Role Responsibilities:
Guide the strategic direction of GRIT:
- Work closely with leadership from United Way of Pierce County, the City of Tacoma, and Pierce County to identify research and story-telling priorities and partners, coordinate their activities, and ensure efficient and smart execution against the guarantee income initiative’s priorities.
- Identify new opportunities to bring in partners and improve the outcomes of GRIT.
- Develop grant proposals to secure additional funding; manage strategies and activities for donor cultivation and relations.
- Keep critical stakeholders involved and informed by producing high-quality memos, reports, newsletters, and other materials.
- Keep up to date with trends in guaranteed basic income and other policies that align with UWPC’s bold goal.
Administer GRIT:
- Manage day-to-day GRIT operations.
- Prioritize community relations and engagement by updating local partners and responding to community feedback and interest.
- Identify and coordinate on-the-ground administration.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for GRIT participants addressing any questions or concerns and ensure that funds are being disbursed in a timely manner.
- Coordinate research activities.
- Coordinate, vet, and support media requests
- Act as the program's spokesperson for events and media requests
- Coordinate GRIT narrative change and advocacy strategies.
- Coordinate GRIT data releases.
Candidate Qualifications:
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Background: 6+ years of professional experience related to poverty, economic policy, or social work.
Skills & requirements:
- Strong familiarity with guaranteed basic income
- Strong interpersonal skills, extremely resourceful, determined, passionate, and committed to excellence.
- Background of professional experience related to poverty, economic policy, or social work.
- Track record of starting or building new initiatives or programs
- Knowledge of and experience using evaluation and community-based research to inform program development and execution.
- Experience working with governing bodies, including advisory boards.
- Record of success engaging a variety of stakeholders, including residents and community groups, and demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional staff.
- Excellent project management skills
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with ease in public presentations
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Understanding the strength of diversity, and the need for solutions to support all regardless of race, religion, gender, immigration status, or ethnicity.
- Multilingual
- Ability to commute to and spend extensive time in Tacoma.
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree preferred.
