Field Representative
For covering the Eastern Region based in New York
SUMMARY
Actors' Equity is a national labor union of professional actors and stage managers working in live theatre, founded for the purpose of negotiating strong agreements that protect the wages, hours and working conditions of its members, enforcing those agreements, organizing new work opportunities for members and pursuing appropriate legislation on matters affecting their profession. We represent the belief that the art of theatre is an essential cultural and economic component of our society. We are hiring a Field Representative. This position is based in the Eastern Region and is responsible for traveling in the Eastern Region (outside NYC) to meet with members, inspect member’s workplaces related to safe and sanitary conditions of employment and view the productions to make determinations. This position is full time, 9:30a to 5:30p, Monday through Friday; evening and weekend work may be required with the ability to flex your schedule.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Represent Actors’ Equity at meetings with actively working members and/or the geographically based communities.
- Establish travel itinerary to visit assigned areas regularly and collaborate with appropriate Equity staff including Business Representatives and the Diversity & Inclusion and Organizing staff, to ensure productive and well-prepared visits.
- Educate and engage members on issues of importance and gather information, questions and concerns from members and, depending on the matter, inform the appropriate Equity staff to address.
- Identify and pursue opportunities in the assigned areas for expanding Equity’s strategic interests in consultation with appropriate Equity staff such as Business Representatives, Diversity & Inclusion and Organizing teams. This includes identifying potential member leaders, building connections with partner organizations, and staying informed on industry-related issues.
- Enforce safe and sanitary, in the Eastern Region for LORT, COST and other agreements. This includes viewing shows, conducting set and theater walks and making safe and sanitary determinations.
- Evaluates risks in emergencies related to safe and sanitary conditions and provides resolutions to members, employers and Equity staff.
- Process pre-production safety information sheets from Employers and/or Stage Managers in the Eastern Region. This will include reviewing the information provided from shows and identifying and discussing the safety issues with the employer to confirm compliance with agreement rules and/or guidance.
- Make risk and set move determinations for shows across the Eastern Region. This includes viewing shows in-person and making determinations from videos for shows.
- Inspect performance, rehearsal and audition spaces as needed to ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
- Work to minimize or eliminate risks as much as possible and make show-related determinations within the Union's jurisdiction areas assigned for collective bargaining. This includes negotiating contracts under a supervisor's guidance and processing modification requests and appeals.
- Collaborate with Business Representative(s) to manage the enforcement of safe and sanitary and show determinations within collective bargaining agreements in designated regions.
- Address inquiries from employers and members about Equity and contractual issues related to safety, sanitation, and show determinations.
- Assist members with urgent workplace issues, which may include emergency hotline coverage, as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Two (2) years directly related experience of onsite fieldwork is highly preferred.
- Industry knowledge, including technical theater, first aid, ventilation systems, familiarity with federal, state, and local laws applicable to theatrical operations required.
- Must be detail-oriented with the capacity to manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven setting.
- Must work proactively, independently, as well as collaboratively with colleagues on various projects.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the capacity to effectively engage with individuals from diverse cultural and background settings.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, along with proficient presentation abilities are necessary.
- Negotiating skills.
- Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as Equity determines if it is necessary or desirable to meet its organizational needs. Working in the evening and/or on a weekend may be necessary.
- Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.
- OSHA certification is a plus.
- Industrial hygienist or public health and research background is a plus.
- Experience with Microsoft CRM preferred.
