Overview:
We are seeking a laboratory technician who will focus on receipt, shipment, and analysis of industrial hygiene related samples within the Industrial Hygiene Analytical Laboratory (IHAL). This position resides in the Health and Safety Technical Services Group within the Safety and Operations Services Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Complete daily pickup of samples from remote drop-off locations.
Serve as the primary interface for sample receipt and shipment to external laboratories.
Assist in the analysis of bulk and air asbestos samples.
Perform sample preparation to support the IHAL’s metals analysis activities.
Conduct routine quality checks of the laboratory’s analytical equipment (i.e. refractometers, thermometers, etc.).
Assist with laboratory waste disposition activities.
Basic Qualifications:
Associate degree in a technical field and a minimum of two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and specialized training are required.
Experience in a multi-discipline, multi-task, and integrated/functional organizational environment.
Skilled in verbal and written communications including report writing/sampling documentation.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Experience working in a changing environment that requires interfacing with multiple health and safety disciplines.
Experience working with personal computer software including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience performing polarized light and phase contrast microscopy.
Experience in an analytical laboratory.
Basic knowledge of industrial hygiene and safety regulatory requirements and consensus standards (i.e. OSHA, ACGIH, etc.).
Familiarity with NIOSH and OSHA sampiling and analysis methods.
Speical Requirements:
Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
