About Evansville State Hospital:
Evansville State Hospital is one of the Indiana State Psychiatric Hospitals who are committed to the mission of Hope and Recovery. Residing on 88 acres on the east side of Evansville, Ind., our facility provides medical treatment for chronic mental illness and substance abuse disorders from our dedicated team of psychiatrists and advanced practice professionals. Active Treatment helps our patients achieve their goals directed towards living in the most non-restrictive environment possible.
Our team of professionals assist our patients in the treatment process involving medical staff, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation therapy and our community integration program. Evansville State Hospital continues to maintain accreditation through The Joint Commission as an Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital as well as Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services certification as a Psychiatric Medicare/Medicaid Hospital.
Salary: This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $39,000.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
Location: This position is located in Evansville, IN.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Oversee the daily operations of the Health Information Services Department and provide excellent customer service.
- Serve as hospital Health Insurance Portability & Accountability (HIPAA) Privacy and Security Liaison by tracking and follow-up on all privacy complaints, amendment requests, restriction requests, and accounting of disclosure requests.
- Participate in Hospital Governance by Chairing and participating in hospital committees and task groups.
- Train and direct the HIS Dept clerks in the performance of their duties (i.e. recordkeeping, chart analysis, information disclosure, preparation and submittal of court commitment reports, data entry into the Cerner electronic medical record, data entry into View Point State Psychiatric Hospital Admissions and Discharge Web Portal).
- Consult on ICD-10 and DSM-5 coding inquiries for accurate and timely coding of diseases and procedures for reimbursement and statistical report generation.
- Manage the disclosure of protected health information, ensuring that state and federal regulations are adhered to.
- Manage the generation of monthly, quarterly, and yearly statistical reports and specialized studies. Manage the collection of data and data tabulation by HIS staff. Design and write custom reports in the Cerner EMR.
- Manage the accuracy and timeliness of analysis of medical records according to Joint Commission (JC) standards and Medicare/Medicaid documentation regulations.
- Develop and implement FSSA and hospital privacy and security policies and procedures that meet federal and state regulations for patient health information.
- Oversee the retention and destruction of medical records, according to DMHA, state, and federal regulations.
- Develop and conduct concurrent and retrospective review studies of medical records according to The Joint Commission standards.
- Prepare health data for continuous performance improvement and JC accreditation surveys.
- Perform data entry for National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) Research Institute (NRI) reporting, as required by the Joint Commission.
- Maintain a working knowledge of state and federal confidentiality laws, and CMS regulations which govern mental health and medical record practices.
- Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
- Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

What You'll Need for Success:
The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have either
- a Bachelor’s Degree in a non-related field with 4+ years of experience, or
- an Associate’s Degree in a related field with 2+ years of experience, or
- an Associate’s Degree in a non-related field with 6+ years of experience,
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
- Familiarity of state and federal confidentiality codes, including HIPAA regulation.
- Understanding of the Joint Commission, CMS and state regulations regarding health information management.
- Ability to operate computers and coding software.
- Ability to compile reports as requested.
- Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
- Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
