USC Radiation Oncology Newport Beach Medical Director

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. The Department of Radiation Oncology, Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California is a robust team of clinicians and basic science/clinical researchers consisting of approximately 15 physician faculty and 10 medical physicist faculty. We provide services at seven hospitals, including Keck Hospital of USC, Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, USC Arcadia Hospital, Providence St Jude Medical Center, Adventist White Memorial Hospital, Henry Mayo Newall Hospital and up to six community-based clinics when building construction has been completed. The Department has ACR accreditation for USC Norris Cancer Hospital and all of its Keck Medicine of USC regional radiation oncology clinics. The CHLA radiation oncology unit has earned APEX accreditation and is part of the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The program is a full member of the NRG, NSABP, and GOG. It also participates in clinical trials sponsored by SWOG. Our medical physics faculty are directly involved in ensuring quality and safety for clinical operations, clinical research, and education and are initiating a new CAMPEP accredited medical physics residency training program.

The ACGME accredited medical residency training program is based at LAC+USC medical center. The Department at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center is equipped with a state-of the art Varian Truebeam STX with Brain Lab ExacTrac for high precision monitoring of positioning during treatment, a new Varian Truebeam with HyperArc, and a Trilogy machine. Additional integrated technologies include a dedicated Siemens CT simulator, Varian RPM respiratory gating, and prone breast technique. The HDR brachytherapy program is housed in a dedicated procedural suite with full anesthesia capability, and Varisource HDR brachytherapy unit and is active in GU, GYN, skin cancers with plans to add other disease sites. The Keck Hospital houses a Gamma knife that is being upgraded to the latest model. An ongoing program in ocular melanoma involves joint faculty from the Roski Eye Institute who treat patients with episcleral plaque brachytherapy. The departments community-based clinics feature new Varian Truebeam and Halcyon (ring-based gantry) linear accelerators with capabilities for gating, radiosurgery and SBRT. The Adventist White Memorial Hospital and Providence St Jude Medical Center departments that we professionally service also have new Truebeam linear accelerator technology.

The Newport Beach Medical Office Building will house a newly built radiation oncology department and offer outstanding patient convenience and access. The Newport Beach radiation oncology department is also in convenient proximity to the very active USC Newport Beach Medical Oncology practice clinic. The Newport Beach department features four state of the art modalities.

Position Summary

This Radiation Oncology Newport Beach Medical Director is responsible for preparations and plans for the Grand Opening of a brand-new center and will oversee startup and sustained growth of this state-of-the-art radiation oncology department in Orange County. The Medical Director will ensure standardization of practice parameters, clinical pathways, and quality improvement initiatives through collaboration with other faculty radiation oncologists and adherence to national guidelines.

The Medical Director reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology in the Keck School of Medicine of USC and is expected to expertly manage and grow the new community-based radiation oncology practice in Newport Beach and participate in quality and safety activities that support hospital initiatives. The Medical Director will lead the implementation of new radiotherapy technology, bringing Precision Radiation Medicine into the community. The Medical Director will also be tasked with developing and expanding these clinical program across the network and participating in research endeavors focusing on these technologies.

Responsibilities:

Primary radiation oncologist working as a full-time on-site Medical Director at the Newport Beach Medical Office Building leading, overseeing, and establishing the clinical operations and standards of the radiation oncology practice in collaboration with Keck Medicine Hospital administration.

Responsible for building out a network of relationships with referring providers and clinics within the community, to increase the volume of the site to its full potential.

Minimum Qualifications

Board Certified Physician (MD or DO); California Medical License, ABR certification in radiation oncology

Possess a California Fluoroscopic supervisors license

Broad based oncology experience in an academic medical center satellite or community setting.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal faculty candidate should possess excellent leadership skills in a community-based radiation oncology setting, familiarity with community-based health care, rich experience in oncology practice and operations, and ability to promote a culture of quality and safety. Prior experience as a medical director of a radiation oncology department is desired. Track record of working in a clinical high volume radiation oncology setting. Prior academic experience that merits an academic faculty appointment supported by the candidates academic track record, broad geographic reputation, and thought leadership.

Prior leadership or directorship level experience in the field.

7-10+ years of clinical experience in a high-volume clinical environment.

The ability to build out local networks and maintain referring relationships with other providers and oncologist in the region.

Prior experience with leading, participating, and/or implementing quality and safety metrics, PI indicators, clinical operational workflows, etc.

The annual base salary range for this position is $450,000 - $625,000. You may also be eligible for incentive compensation as defined by your department.
