Location

Sacramento County, CA | United States

Job description

Job Description and Duties

The Climate Indicators and Site Assessment Section (CISAS), Air and Site Assessment and Climate Indicator Branch (ASACIB), focuses on the assessment of risk from exposures to chemicals found contaminating sites. In that regard, CISAS provides consultative services to the California Regional Water Quality Control Boards and local governmental entities on health risks from exposures to contaminants at sites undergoing investigation and cleanup. In addition, CISAS provides scientific review of, and input into the development of guidance or policy addressing exposures at contaminated sites.

Under general direction of the Environmental Program Manager I (Supervisory), the Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) primarily acts as a statewide expert on site-specific risk assessments on contaminated sites. The Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) provides toxicological expertise and consultation in support of other state and local government site cleanup programs, in particular serving as a technical expert on the collection, use and interpretation of data for assessing human or ecological risk following the release of hazardous chemicals onto soil or water. OR

Under direction of the Environmental Program Manager I (Supervisory), Chief, CISAS, the Associate Toxicologist performs work of average difficulty in assessing human or ecological health risks associated with contaminated sites. The Associate Toxicologist will review less complex risk assessment documents, and advise on toxicological issues and risk assessments in support of other state and local government site cleanup programs. Less complex risk assessments are those involving few chemical contaminants, where the toxicity of these chemicals are well known, where exposures are well defined, and where the collection, use and interpretation of data for assessing human or ecological risk following the release of hazardous chemicals to soil or water are simple and straightforward. All work products will be subject to review by more senior Section colleagues, including the section chief.
