Job Description
General Summary
Under limited supervision of the Sergeant and Security Manager, using a customer service orientation, provides security, safety, and acts in an assistant leadership capacity to security personnel for the safety and security of patients, visitors and staff on the University of Maryland Medical System campus. May provide shuttle/escort service to visitors and staff to locations within the Medical System campus. Provides leadership and guidance to security officers when the Sergeant is scheduled off or when the Sergeant is working but unable to provide leadership and direction to security officers due to assignments or other calls for service.
Qualifications
Education and Experience

* High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. Associate's Degree or equivalent in Social Sciences or related field preferred. Possession of Special Police Commission or eligibility to be commissioned by the Maryland State Police is required. Must successfully complete an oleoresin capsicum course, which includes undergoing a direct exposure to the product.
* Four years of experience in security or law enforcement is required. Experience in a hospital facility is preferred. Education may be substituted for some experience. Previous experience in a lead or supervisory role is preferred, but not required.
* Completion of a CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) course on Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is required within one year of hire or placement into the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Demonstrated customer service skills including highly effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are required to work successfully with a diverse group of staff at various levels within the organization, to document incidents of violations and to give directions to patients, visitors, and staff.
* Demonstrated knowledge of safety hazards, fire safety, suspect apprehension, arrest procedures, and building safety techniques are required.
* Problem solving ability is required to ask probing questions of staff, patients, and visitors to assist in the gathering of information for investigations of reported safety/security incidents.
* Possession of a valid Class C Maryland driver's license is required. Must be able to operate manual transmissions.
