Job description

Job Title:  Registered Nurse

Department:  Surgical Services, Operating Room

Position Status :  Full Time, 36 hours per week, with on-call

Schedule : day shift, option between 5x8s, 4x10s, and 3x12s. Call is on a rotating schedule with a 30 min response time required, on-site call house available.

RN to Patient Ratio: 1 case at a time

Position Summary:  Registered Nurses at Cayuga Medical Center are an integral part of the collaborative interdisciplinary team devoted to the delivery of comprehensive and compassionate care to the Tompkins County community. RNs are able to practice at their full scope of practice, and have the opportunity to engage in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs and services with the goal of improving patient outcomes, and execute an optimal plan of care in a shared governance environment.

Location:  Cayuga Medical Center/Surgicare (Outpatient Surgery Center)

Department Specific:  The Operating Room offers the opportunity to work in a fast paced environment with an energetic and stimulating group of providers and colleagues. OR orientation is 3-6 months, depending on previous experience, guided by PeriOp 101 through AORN, and using a didactic education model, in conjunction with hands-on learning. Skill development resources include a StimLab, Virtual Reality Headset, StimMan, and access to CNOR education, along with organization-wide resources. OR RNs are able to develop their skills in both scrub and circulation responsibilities, and case variety allows for new experiences on a consistent basis. Cayuga Medical Center also houses a DaVinci Surgical System for robotic-assisted procedures.

Essential Functions:

  1. Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  2. Assesses patient physical condition. Reviews history & physical, vital signs, diagnostic studies, reports any abnormalities.
  3. Conducts pre- and post-operative education. Assess knowledge level, ability to understand and coping mechanisms of patient and support system and educate as needed.
  4. Identifies, prioritizes and organizes nursing action and activities necessary for the desired outcomes.
  5. Coordinates patient care team, use of supplies and equipment for intraoperative care, and controls the environment.
  6. Establishes priorities for nursing actions, assigns activities to personnel based on qualifications, and prepares for potential emergencies. Is aware of complications that may require special equipment.
  7. Coordinates patient care in the Operating Room according to Association of perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) standards and guidelines.
  8. Appropriately utilizes Universal Protocol per Cayuga Medical Center policy.
  9. Anticipates needs and provides equipment and supplies based on patient age, health status and proposed procedure.
  10. Plans and organizes self to meet patient care requirements and unit needs within shift. Stays beyond as necessary.
  11. Demonstrates ability to prioritize needs and care of patient during both scheduled and emergent situations.
  12. Demonstrates ability to stay calm, function with purpose and react appropriately in all situations
  13. Communicates and documents monitoring and physiologic responses to interventions (e.g. Medications, vital signs, LOC, skin color, change in physical status, etc.) to alert surgeon/anesthesiologist of changes that may require medical intervention.
  14. Demonstrates effective delegation skills.
  15. Completes all mandatory educational requirements and seeks out learning experiences.
  16. Demonstrates adherence to infection control policies and correct hand washing/scrubbing technique.
  17. Demonstrates adherence to safety policies.
  18. Demonstrates quality and effective communication with all team members.
  19. Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate with other departments (Main Campus or SC, ED, Radiology, ICU, etc).
  20. Demonstrates flexibility and accepts change as needed.
  21. Remains attentive to detail, record keeping and required documentation inherent to position.
  22. Completes operative record promptly and accurately at the end of each case. Including complete charges with implants and consignment items.
  23. Fulfills all full-time or part-time requirements for hours worked for which hired (FT - 37.5, PT - 30.0, etc.)
  24. Fulfills all weekday and weekend on call requirements - this applies to FT and PT
