Job description
The Laboratory Animal Resources(LAR) team at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Clinical Veterinarian.
Responsibilities of this position include: providing veterinary care for teaching and research animals; training faculty and staff; reviewing proposed courses and research projects involving animals; performing experimental procedures; and oversight of projects in progress.
The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of animal welfare regulations and the ability to apply the regulations and explain them to faculty, staff and students; a strong clinical background and ability to apply principles and skills to a variety of species including, but not limited to, livestock, poultry, wildlife, and exotics; and be capable of designing appropriate housing and enrichment techniques for animals housed in a laboratory setting.
The candidate should possess excellent oral and written communication skills; be self-motivated, self-reliant, goal oriented; and work well with a broad group of individuals.
This position will be hired as Veterinarian job profile which requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent and 5 years of related experience.
Additional required qualification: License to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state, with eligibility for licensure in the state of Iowa.
The pay grade for this position is a PS812.
Example of Duties
⢠Develops and implements programs of preventive animal health care, routine animal health monitoring, conditioning, and quarantine.
⢠Provides veterinary care to ill and injured animals of a variety of animal species including wildlife and exotic animal species.
⢠Provides training to research staff and animal care staff.
⢠Monitors and develops new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
⢠Advises the Director of current issues and needs in the Veterinary Care Program and assists in long-range planning for the program.
⢠Assures that containment and requirements determined by the Institutional Biosafety Committee are observed by animal care and research staff.
⢠Assists in developing policies and trains others on policies and procedures.
⢠Interprets regulations, rules, and policies in the development of proposals and operating plans.
⢠Utilizes computerized or automated systems to input and retrieve pertinent information.

⢠May provide supervision to other department staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
