About the Position
A Medical Surgical Registered Nurse at Lifespan provides care for patients both before and after various medical procedures, manages a broad and complex range of needs, and often times maintains a higher patient case load than other nurses. As a Med/Surg RN with Lifespan, you will assess patient conditions, administer medications, change dressings, monitor vital signs, keep records, and provide patients with support and education. Due to the nature of the unit, you will need a diverse and extensive knowledge and skill base within nursing care in order to meet the needs of your patients that have a wide variety of medical issues or are recovering from surgery.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care
- Provide leadership by delegating, supervising, and participating in safe nursing care activities provided by ancillary personnel
- Evaluate effectiveness of patient care and identify opportunities for improvement
- Collaborate with the healthcare team, patients and their families, and community services for patient care outcome and discharge planning
- Assess and provide appropriate education based on the patient and family needs
- Participate in unit-based quality improvement and research activities
- Utilize all available resources to provide quality, cost-effective patient care
- Identify growth needs and participate in educational opportunities and professional organizations
- Serve as a role model or preceptor to new graduate nurses and less experienced personnel
Key Results
- Show care and compassion for a wide age range and cultural backgrounds
- Determine priority of care based on physical, psychological, and social needs as well as other factors influencing patient flow
- Perform focused assessments of chief complaints of each patient in a timely manner
- Care for the patient from arrival to admission or facilitate timely discharges

Requirements
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Rhode Island
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN), preferred
- Basic Life Support certification
- Current ACLS certification or obtain within 6 months of employment
