Your Opportunity
The role of a Railroad Structures Engineer is to work as a team member on small and large projects under the guidance of a Senior Railroad Bridge Engineer and other US-SE Rail Team Senior Staff. This role will work under close supervision to develop skills in evaluating, selecting, specifying, and engineering systems or products for a project. A Railroad Structures Engineer will perform a variety of tasks which may include assisting with railroad bridge and structures projects, including inspections, the development of construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, engineering reports and studies for railroad projects, including bridges, related railroad structures, and other structural elements.
Your Key Responsibilities
First and foremost, will be an acute attention to safety, both in the office and in the field.
You will have a hands-on role in railroad bridge and structures projects.
Select and apply appropriate design criteria to perform minor, major, and complex bridge and structures design and load rating assignments.
Assists in the preparation of engineering project documents, such as design calculations, pertaining to specific projects.
Prepare high quality contract documents (plans, specifications, and estimates) for the construction of railroad structures such as bridges, retaining walls, box culverts, and trusses.
Perform annual railroad bridge inspections and develop the corresponding inspection reports.
Recognizes when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions.
Utilizes relevant software packages to perform structural design and analysis (MathCAD, CSiBridge, etc.)
Utilizes relevant software packages to prepare working and final drawings in accordance with client standards (Bentley suite of products, AutoDesk products).
Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned, and able to be cross trained for related civil engineering disciplines including track, roadway, earthwork, etc.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the design team.
Working knowledge of codes, legal, and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions and developing jurisdictional experience and contacts.
Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite.
Developing ability to effectively discuss project issues.
MicroStation experience is a plus.
Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive a non-CDL truck.
Be able to pass initial and random FRA Drug Tests.
Be willing to work outside and at heights.
Be able to work a non-standard week when necessary.
Strong communication skills – both verbal and written.
Be able to work well with others in a team setting.
General knowledge of railroad design standards – Class I, AREMA, Amtrak, etc.
Strong work ethic and ability to self-motivate.
Strong desire to learn and progress in the rail industry.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Civil Engineering or related degree from a recognized and accredited college or university
Professional Engineering license, or ability to obtain within a year is highly preferred.
2-4 years related experience in bridge design, analysis, or inspection.
2-4 years related experience in railroad bridge design, railroad bridge inspection, railroad bridge rehabilitation, or railroad projects strongly preferred.
Experience preparing project calculations and deliverables.
Experience with MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Bluebeam, Word, Excel, and/or PowerPoint and applying/developing CAD standards.
