Position Responsibilities

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Student Extern will work under the supervision of a PMHNP or Psychiatrist, and with a primary care treatment team, to learn to identify, triage, and manage patient care for behavioral health patients within the primary care setting. In addition, the student extern will learn to practice patient education strategies to develop specific behavioral change plans for patients and behavioral health protocols for target populations. They will also learn to coordinate prescription refills and assist with providing follow up as needed.


Significant areas of learning include:
• Triaging client phone calls to evaluate client's health care needs.
• Assisting primary health providers in recognizing and treating behavioral health disorders and referring cases to behavioral health specialists as appropriate.
• Providing health care education and information for client self-care needs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
• Current enrollment in an PMHNP program.
• RI RN Licensure.
• Current and Active BLS.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with patients, providers, other members of the healthcare team, other disciplines, and community agencies.
• Have sensitivity to the patient population we serve, by identifying cultural, social, and economic characteristics.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of information and communicate in a professional manner with patients, families, other staff, and outside contacts.
• Exceptional oral and written skills needed.
• Proficient in all applicable medical terminology.
• Good interpersonal skills are needed.


Preferred Qualifications:
• Bilingual in a second language.
• Candidates who do not meet all the preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply.


Physical Effort/ Environment
• The duties of this position are performed at a Thundermist location.
• Moderate physical activity: walking, standing, and stooping.
• Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, respiratory disease, and other infectious diseases, and other biohazards material requiring universal standard precautions for medical practitioners.
• Manual dexterity needed for certain medical procedures.
• Organization skills, neatness; knowledge of safety and infection control standards of practice.
