Job description
Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) is a combat lifesaver course that outlines the priorities of medical care for casualties in combat-related situations as faced in military and law enforcement applications. It is an international standard for trauma life support in pre-hospital combat medicine.
The primary purpose of the LEA TCCC Skills Instructor will be to teach students within the discipline how to effectively treat combat casualties while preventing additional casualties and completing the mission at hand. The three phases of TCCC include: care under fire, tactical field care and tactical evacuation care. The TCCC Instructor will also demonstrate leadership within the department, pathway, and college, respectively.
Please note, at this time, that the hours of this position are limited to 72 hours a session, two times a year (144 total hours)
Part-time Instructors provide instructional duties for the College in their respective areas of expertise. They report to the LEA Director and do not have any supervisory responsibilities. Responsibilities include instruction, student assessment, and other related instructional duties. Instructional delivery may include face-to-face, hybrid, and online. Classes may be held days, evenings, and weekends. The skills instructor must be patient and respectful, while also providing their expectations for what is considered acceptable work. The skills instructor must display dedication to the class as well as the goals of the program.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Instruction - Serves as an instructor regarding TCCC training for LEA students preparing materials and equipment for Trauma Responder Workshops, delivering course content via lecture, interactive activities, skills stations, and training scenarios, tailored towards non-medical adult learners. Supervise skills stations and training scenarios, providing guidance and correction as needed, Maintain workshop materials and equipment
Curriculum creation and communication: Applying advanced medic skills to support training of students that may deploy to potentially austere environments. Supporting high-risk, high-stress training, staff sustainment training, and direct medical training with a focus on medical quality assurance. Educating and training non-medical personnel with a specific focus on primary care techniques. Maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and staying abreast of effective teaching and adult learning strategies, developing solutions which may require analysis and understanding of possible solutions/scenarios. Provide students with a complete syllabus before the first day of class that includes information on course description, objectives, assignments, grading policies, and contact information. Respond timely to students and RRCC staff every 24-48 hours during the class term and for at least one week after grades are submitted. Provide updates to the department chair.
Collaboration - Cultivate inclusive and respectful working relationships that support a sense of belonging for all students, peers, and community members. Required to meet all class periods and start and end classes promptly. Teach assigned curriculum and make use of required texts and materials. Attend department staff meetings throughout the semester as scheduled. After gaining more experience, instructors may be expected to share in broader department coordination duties on a collaborative basis.
Assessment - Conduct post-workshop reviews and activities. Performing logistical and administrative duties in support of workshops or other classes/requirements, to include providing backup support as needed. Provide data on student attendance (no-shows, last day of attendance, etc.), promptly. Use technology to facilitate learning including meeting the required minimum standards for the use of the College learning management system Desire2Learn (D2L). Maintain updated and accurate grading records in D2L and submit all final grades by the due date in the college student information system, Banner. Provide consistent and timely feedback to students regarding progress and grades on assignments.
Required Qualifications: Master’s degree. Prior experience instructing TFCC or similar trauma and tactical courses. If not previous military, three (3) years with Tactical Medicine or Operations through a police SWAT team or its equivalent of verified occupational experience in the discipline within the last seven (7) years. The institutional knowledge of a former criminal justice professional does not change substantially over a period of 15 years of relevant experience, and therefore tested occupational experience is permitted over that time, if the applicant has been involved in teaching, working as a volunteer, reserve, mentor, or some other related field, during the previous 15 years. Experience can include Tactical Medicine (Military, Navy Corpsman, or Army Combat Medic), Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Medic, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) Medic, or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with tactical medical experience.
Current state or National Registry of EMT (NREMT) or EMT- Advanced. FP-C Certification or its equivalent. Current Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) certification. Current CPR certification.
Required knowledge, skills, abilities: Strong pre-hospital emergency medicine clinical skills (EKG, phlebotomy, triage, trauma assessments, etc.). Firm knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and patient education. Experience in providing high-stress training to include various medical trainings. Knowledge and/or experience with curriculum and teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse populations and with the use of instructional technology including classroom application distance learning. Evidence of incorporating technology into classroom instruction. Experience/familiarity with assessment of student learning, instructional effectiveness and/or adult learning. Demonstrated ability to work in a team with diverse groups of people, with minimal supervision. Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. Displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner. Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products, D2L, and other computer software as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in a field focused on prehospital medicine or any other health related field. AND two years instructing TCCC or similar trauma and tactical courses. If not previous military, five (5) years of high-level Tactical Medicine or Operations through police SWAT team or its equivalent in Law Enforcement . Membership in or experience working in diverse communities and supporting the success of individuals from racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented.
Current state or National Registry of EMT (NREMT) or EMT- Advanced. FP-C Certification or its equivalent. Current Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) certification. Current CPR certification.

Department Information: The Red Rocks Law Enforcement Academy is an intensive instructional program that satisfies the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (POST) certification requirements.* Colorado Law requires that candidates for peace officer and parole positions be POST certified before they work as a law enforcement officer. Our graduates have gone on to join police departments, sheriff’s offices, and state agencies.
