New England Donor Services (NEDS) coordinates organ and tissue donation in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, the eastern counties of Vermont and Bermuda. Responsible for one of the largest of the 56 Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) that make up the nation’s donation system, NEDS works with over 200 hospitals and serves 14 million people in our region, screening nearly 55,000 potential donor referrals annually. With approximately $110M in operating revenues, NEDS employs 300 clinical and non-clinical staff members throughout New England and across the country.

Job Description

A qualified candidate for this role must have prior experience approaching families for Organ & Tissue donation.

The  Family Resource Coordinator (FRC) is an empathetic, respectful and skilled professional dedicated to the NEDS mission of saving and enhancing lives through organ and tissue donation. The FRC assists hospitals 365 days a year to support collaborative donation processes to ensure that all potential donor families are offered the opportunity for donation via telecommunication. 

Schedule

The Family Resource Coordinator fulfills a call schedule that provides coverage to the entire NEDS service area. Schedule will be approximately 3-4 shifts per week, a combination of 12 hour on-call and scheduled days, including some weekend days. Shift times will be 9:00am - 9:00pm

• Fulfills a schedule with a combination of on-call and scheduled days to meet changing organizational needs, including some weekend days. Must be able to work a remote 12-hour on-call shift.
• Receives new referrals from Team Lead, PFSC, or their designee; calls referring hospital to obtain more information to assess for potentiality of implementing a preliminary discussion and/or approach.
• Approach for donation on new or open referrals at hospitals, assigned by the respective Team Leader, PFSC or their designee, to offer donor families the opportunity for organ and tissue donation.
• Participates in required meetings and trainings.
• Maintains an individual authorization rate, which demonstrates best practice skills in the area of obtaining authorization.
• Through education, helps donor families to understand and accept the diagnosis of death as described by the primary care physician.
• In the absence of donor designation, assesses the patient's legal next-of-kin's readiness to engage in a discussion for the opportunity of organ and tissue donation.
• Advocates for donation while being respectful of cultural and/or religious beliefs.
• Provides initial follow up to donor family after donation.
• Completes appropriate documentation regarding approach and authorization.
• Carries out other duties as deemed appropriate by the Director, Family Services or designee.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook, and the ability to learn NEDS’ internal systems including True North, Sharepoint
• The ability to work empathetically, compassionately and professionally with families in crisis, to provide education on organ and tissue donation and to advocate for donation while being respectful of individual family circumstances.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate openly and effectively with donor families, all members of hospital and NEDS teams
• Critically think, problem solve, and work productively both independently and as a team participant.
• Respond to changing needs; prioritize effectively, and to communicate effectively and constructively during times of stress.

Qualifications

Qualifications

• Previous experience approaching families for Organ and Tissue donation is required.
• Bachelor’s Degree in social work, health sciences or related field; or significant equivalent experience in another Organ Procurement Organization
• Experience in hospice care, bereavement counseling, or social work preferred
• Clinical Knowledge: Ability to conduct and document medical/social histories.
• Previous hospital experience preferred
• Spanish and/or Portuguese language proficiency preferred

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

• CPE, CLS, or Social Work License preferred

Compensation is determined based on work experience and transferable skills, with the range starting of $70,0000 - $80,000, higher for directly relatable experience. 

This is a fully remote position, must be available for week long onsite orientation in Waltham, MA.
